Need some advice guys. Put new exhaust backbox (standard from AndyZ) on my Jap TT on Monday, MOT when through fine on Tuesday, drove it properly on Wednesday. Some white smoke coming out the passeneger exhaust, assumed it was just condensation from the new backbox. Smoke stopped, no problems. Thursday heard a rattling sound which turned into a very loud knocking as I was finding somewhere to stop. AA out, £140 flat bed towtruck home.

Running theory is that the passeneger side head gasket went, which dumped the oil out the back, as there is a little oil out the backbox... that was what the smoke was, which stopped presumably cos the cat got blocked up. Then I reckon the bearings on the crank shaft have gone and the crank is loose. Something now sounds like it's rattling around loose in there... hopefully it's not something that's gone through the engine. The car still runs, just with the knocking/rattling. On the positive side, despite no oil, the car was no overheating (when I stopped). Now my questions are:

1) does that sound realistic to what might have happened (based on the rather limited info)?

2) If that is what happened, what am I likely to need to replace (so far list is head gasket, crank bearings, crank, cat, errr... cant think what else, too stressed). Anything else? Am I likely to have cooked the turbos (bearing in mind no oil), broken anything else etc?

3) Is there anything else worth replacing when the rest is getting repaired?

4) What's the likelyhood would you all think of any other problems?

Sorry for all the q's but want to go into the garage with as much info as I possibly can.

After it happened, I'm only now posting cos I've stopped being hung over!!!

Cheers,

David

white smoke not oil mate...that would be darker...blue/grey

White will be water most likely,,,as you say, second hand so likely to be condensation/water.

From what u say the rattle is exhaust rather than engine....My pipes rattle as they are as rusty as you like and bits have dropped off inside but not worried abut it as know they are as good as dead!

If in doubt mate get it checked properly if you dont know about it all.

Whts the worst that could happen?

Good luck!

Oh no, it's engine, not exhaust. The smoke I saw may have been condensation, but there's definitely oil out the backbox now (could have happened right at the end). There's defintely something loose smack bang in the middle of the engine bay.

the new backbox could not have caused this!

Sounds like big ends have gone m8, if its a loud knocking from the engine then its defo that, bad news is if it was smokeing then it may have come up and cracked the head :( but it may not be. Got my fingers crossed for ya that its not

is the noise deffo engine & not turbo??

if a turbo goes then it will pump oil straight into the exhaust.

hows your oil pressure, if youve lost oil pressure it could be thats whats caused it to go & is whats causing the ends to knock.

Oil pressure is non existent based on there's no oil in the engine any more!!! Guess I was hoping someone would say "no, don't worry, it's porbably only something simple" but that was just wishfull thinking! I'll just have to get it looked at and see what the state of play is. Good job I just remortgaged, but something tells me I wont be extending the lease on my flat now!

Cheers guys,

David

oil pressure sensor fails a lot, its a common problem. Try replacing that first.

LOL!! it wont dump oil out the exhaust or make knocking noises tho ;)

Much as I wish it was the sensor, Paul C's right unfortuinately. I'm no mechanic, but when there's serious engine knocking and oil dumped out the back, I know enough to swear lots!!!!!

Anyone heard of or used a garage called Iverson Tyres in Chiswick, West London?

Been recommended as they are fairly cheap and I've seen them working on Ferarri's and other top sports cars as well as changing tyres on Vauxhall Calibras, so think they should know what they are doing and they are within towable distance for my car (don't want to pay for another flatbed tow again!!!).
