Hi all,

Went down to visit some friends in Enfield, and saw Tesco Petrol at a low 77.3 pence.

But... I put just over half a tank in. Then on the way back home the car was jurking and the sound from the engine was not good. Just got home, and did a ECU Diagnostics and found out the crap petrol was causing detonation :( .

So just watch out what petrol you use.

Alastair.

Don't use supermarket piss.

Dont use anything else than Optimax! Unleaded is rated at only 95 octane. Optimax is 98 Esso super is 97. Dont use 95 or else BANG!! :(

i travel 10miles for optimax everytime no doubt ;)

Agreed. Done that a few times too. If I go to my girlfriends for the weekend I have to travel 6 miles in the wrong direction to fill up with optimax. Would not use anything else unless I was desperate and then I'd drive it really carefully.

yep agreeg. I only use Optimax, but if it's an emergency and I'm stuck with no petrol I will use another brand but turn my boost all the way down to 8 psi.

How does an ECU diagnostic show if you've had detonation?

I use cheapo Tesco fuel all the time, unless it's very hot or a dyno run, but then my car was mapped for standard unleaded, so it's not a problem. But I also have a dual map at the flick of a switch, so that's not a problem either !

If you dont have a boost controller, the turbos will be in safety boost. I think the ECU will give a knock sensor error too.

I think the ECU will give a knock sensor error too.

Will it? I thought you only get a code 34 if the detonation sensor is faulty or the harness is faulty.

If I remember rightly there's only about 4 actual refineries in the country... so the actual petrol you put in your car comes from one of 4 places... the supermarkets buy it from the big companies like BP etc. Cant remember who provides who, but the whole supermarket p1ss poor petrol theory should only apply if it's something to do with the actual station itself, perhaps it wasn't a well used pump and the petrol was old?

Well i've been useing ASDA Unleaded most of the time, I do use Optimax as well every fourth tank full, and it makes absolutley NO differance at all!!!!!!! The Nissan main dealer whom I brought it from put normal 95 ron in it for me when I picked it up.

But then mine is totally standard, engine wise..... and YES it HAS been on a ConZult since useing 95. Also the ASDA we have in town is a reletiveley new(ish) one, so that could help.

Well fook me glad I just read this post as I was able to create my own thread!!!

I get detonation at about 13psi with standard fuel so I have been turning my boost down to compensate this!

Right thats it, tomorrow, filling up with Optimax and turning the boost up to 15psi and I'm gonna see what she sounds like!

I have heard this could be my injectors though not up to the job but we will see!!!

I use 95RON with no probs.....

then I have a UK car which was set to run on it anyway

Only use Shell or BP though (mainly because I collect the points)

Richard :D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I got a pretty much standard Jap import and do the sainsburys/BP thing (nectar points!),,

wonder what petrol they have in japan????

Ever thought about using an octane booster/additive??

Had a mate with a Scooby who reckoned this was the only way his would run well????????

My Uk Spec car and Jap TT SWB have both been runnig on standard 95 octane for the last 4 years.

I have never had a problem with the UK car but the Jap car seems to put itself into safety boost at regular intervals.

Is this all down to Petrol (Jap Car Chipped) Uk car stock.?
