It's very sad that we fooked it up in the last few minutes, it should have been in the bag :(

Rooney's almost-goal was class, but he could have laid it off to Vassell easily enough instead of attempting to skin France's centre half ... he'd already beaten two midfielders, how far did he think he could push his luck? Typical Rooney! In which case it would have been a Vassell goal instead of a missed Beckham penalty.

 

Vassell was pretty busy and useful I thought... Owen very quiet - but to be fair it looked like we were pushing up the right on purpose, so Owen on the left was never going to see much.

 

We were lucky the French didn't spot the gaps on our left - Scholes kept wandering into his usual spot in the hole - middle instead of left - and Cole is toss anyway. Things looked a lot better shapewise when Hargreaves came on, so I hope we use that left side against the more Brazilian style teams like Portugal.

 

Beckham didn't seem to be firing on all cylinders but the change in style of his play this year was very apparent. He got back and protected the right wing a LOT more than he ever did in the United era. Zidane was gutted for him - did you see when they talked to each other walking off the pitch?

 

Our goal was a classic England goal - Lampard connected well but there were another couple of players right near him anyway. I actually thought King had put it in at first!

 

King was shit on toast and deserves to start ahead of Ferguson in a defensive game anyway on that performance.

 

Zidane free kick - nothing could have been done about that, was almost a reply of Beckham v Greece. Of course if Mr Ed hadn't given the bloody kick away in the first place...

 

Penalty was a mistake, don't think Gerrard saw Henry was there... James had to do SOMETHING and couldn't use his hands because it was a back pass. He'd have been amazingly lucky to slide it away from Henry without a foul. I thought James had a good match for a change.

 

Two more performances like that and we'll easily qualify - although Henry was quiet initially, and Prso may not be so obliging!
