Programmes wanted for PC/info/internet protection!

Hi All,

Just wondered if I am fully protected!

What programmes do you guys recommend for protecting your pc/info on the net?

For keeping your pc in working order?

I was just gonna post that!

Got a new pc last week and had the blaster worm within 1min of turning it on.

Fixed it with fixblast form supportinabox.com.

Im on windows xp home and now have a firewall from them and spyware from aol.

Really quick page loading now with 1152kps broadband - recommended!

I had norton system works on my old pc, any one recommend the latest version?

Or any other antivirus stuff?

Cheers,

I've run a few differant ones in the past, but I'm currentley using Norton AntiVirus 2003, and McAfee as my firewall, along with SpyBot search and Destroy for spyware. I'm also running Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper.

All of these seem to work well with each other. Norton updates itself automatically, and SpyBot is a very good programme.

HTH

Currently hiding behind ZoneAlarm (available free from download.com) and VirusScan On-Access. I tried SpyWare or was it SpySweeper but it seemed to be mucking up a few other settings so it was junked.

My recomendations are

Zone Labs, Zone alarm firewall (Simple to use)

AVG Anti Virus (Best virus protection I have used and updated almost every day and sometimes a few times a day. I had norton and it could be weeks inbetween each update)

Webroot's Spysweeper

CWShredder.

Keep upto date

TBH Mark, you are never 100% protected and no matter what you have you are always at danger from the net.

But using these programs will deter 99.9% of people who think they are hackers but use other people programs to access some ones computer. The other 0.1% are so advanced at hacking they could bring your computer down in mins, but doing that is too easy so they try on main frames and goverment systems.

Webroot Spysweeper & McAfee Security suite

Works a treat for me :)

Luck.

I used all the above and still got nailed. So luck. Need to downloads shed loads of luck, comes in handy for other things as well.

No Just be carful what you download.

My dad uses Kazaa and downloads programs and stuff and he gets viruses all the time. I dont download progs from there and hardly get viruses.

However, auto updates on my virus checker every time I boot up and a full scan every on the first boot up of every day helps a lot.

its all very well protecting yourself etc, but whats more important imo is backing up, and being able to restore easily.

Windows XP's own system restore/roll back is sometimes useful, but if you've suffered a bad virus etc its pretty flakey.

I use Norton Ghost once a week to backup onto a seperate hdd, only takes 10 mins and I know i can easily restore it if my installation goes tits up. Well handy.

Norton AV and Norton Firewall, checking for downloads everytime i switch on.

The firewall is doing a great job, i'm broadband and get atleast 6 attempted hacks a day.

What is wierd is it usually happens after visiting a site which asks if you are 18 before you can look at the pictures, go figure!!!

I use a hardware nat firewall that basically blocks all incoming traffic but still allows me to seemlessly use the internet, I use AVG virus scanner and am also careful about what i download.

I've never been infected with a virus with this setup.

Where do you get AVG antivirus, can i download it ? (or will i get a virus :-))

Cheers,

I had Norton 2004. It did not detect 2 virus' on my hard drive. downloaded AVG free edition. It found the virus' and killed them. I've since binned Norton. Very disappointed with it.

Last week I wiped my hard drive and started again. The only sites I visited were windows updates and guess what?

I got 7 new viruses, funny how some of you are saying how good AVG is when the Norton found 7 the AVG found 2.

Used the Norton for over 4 years and had a trouble free PC. WONT be changing Norton for crap AVG:D;)
