So the their fuel mapping is the same, they use a different scale scale which equates to our higher looking scale!

The question is the Jap fuel octane the same as ours?

Maybe nelson with his petrochemical links can elaborate?????

In Japan they use RON to measure their fuel, the same as we do, as far as I'm aware.

The US use (MON+RON)/2, so it depends on the MON what the exact RON equivalent is.

my mates jap impreza holed a piston on 95 ron so no.

Jez I believe the japs use the same scale, not the same octane, they have I believe 103 octane and use that in their mapping, so no wonder your mate blew a piston!!

I try not to run the MR-2 on anything other than Optimax, however the Hi-Lux is a different story...that's an import but doesn't like unleaded...probably due to the fact that it's a diesel! ROFLMFAO :)

LOL

I put a couple of tanks of BP Ultimate diesel through the Leon and it's definitely cleaned things out a bit, one dead spot gone! The other one is at the top (top = 3800 revs  ) and requires AFM cleaning. :(

Class sig! PMSL :)

Regular petrol in Japan in 95 octane and Super is 100. They use the same rating system as the UK (RON).

My understanding is that 100 is the highest available using this system of measurement. It works like a ratio. 98 octane petrol is 98 percent one thing (good thing) and 2 percent other thing (not so good thing). Sorry for the crappy explanation, never was very good at chemistry. But anyway, therefore 103 is not possible according to my understanding of the situation. Not sure, it may be possible using the american system of measurement.

What I've never had suitable explained to me is why we can't buy 100 octane fuel in the UK.

Any answers? I expect it's to do with Europe, or pollution, or both.

I think the components that up the octane are very nasty for pollution and health and when your average car runs on any old shite there's not much point really.

No, you can get octane numbers over 100, up to around 120 I think.
