Can anyone tell what sort of price i'd be looking at for a slight brake up grade nothing top notch just better discs and pads and also how can i tell if a caliper has ceased??

I have never liked the brakes on the Z so want something a bit better and hopefully stop the bloody squeaking i have had for months even after changing the front pads.

Thanks all.

Ant :)

Mate, what pads do you have on there ?

I'll have a drive of it this week and I'll be able to tell if one of your pistons have ceased.

Will call you tomorrow mate.

You might want to consider 3G disks http://www.3gbrakes.co.uk and Porterfield pads http://www.porterfield-brakes.com combo. Very pleased with mine, not very expensive and good quality/durability.

Shahid

Thanks i have emailed for a price, what type did you get and how much did it all cost if you dont mind me asking??

Also can i just change the front or do i need to do the rears too??

Thanks

Ant

I got the Skyline R34 calipers, disks and pads for £500.

They just bolt straight on with no messing.

I just put a post in the wanted section of gtr.co.uk

£303 for the front & rear disc directly from 3G and £140 for the 4 pads from Whifbitz. Mind you, these prices are over a year old, so things may have changed. Went for the 10 groove discs and R4S pads. Guess there's no problem in just changing the fronts but I'm sure someone on here who's done the same can offer some guidance.

Smithy do these pads squeal as i know some high performance ones do and i really dont want that.

I am wanting to get the brakes all sorted after the 25th of this month will you still have a set?? front and rears???

Shahid..

Are these discs good then as they seem like quite a good price are they just a direct replacement for the old ones or does it involve changing things??

Thanks to all for your help.

Ant ;)

personally I can't stop my portfields from squeeling, but the braking itself is unreal. I'd rather have squeeling brakes than no brakes ;).

If if I can hijack and ask if anyone knows a way to stop these from queeling, let me know (I 've tried copper ease plenty of times - no good).

As i have found out,but as you say Stu,great stopping power, its just one of those things with this type of pad, maybe later i will try some Axis,or Ferrodo pads, see if things differ.

Tony

ps,thing is they do not squeel when braking moderate/hard,just after they have done heavy work and you use light pressure.

yep, I agree traffic is the only problem. Hard braking you get no squeel at all.

I have the standard ones and agree they arent up to alot, since buying the z I have developed a right leg like a bodybuilder! (yep, servo and everything is ok)

In the past I have prevented squeal by grinding the edges off each pad braking lining and doing the old 'copper grease' thing on the back and each contact edge of the pad which works well without compromising braking or safety, only a short term measure though!

has any one used the red stuff pads???? not sure what ones to get really

Red Stuff are great when hot but wear out in no time and just will not stop you when they are cold.

Mine lasted 2 months and I almost had to use the handbrake to stop for the first 15 mins.

I'd avoid like the plague!

Slight brake upgrade?

Get some SS brake lines and some top quality racing fluid, that should give you a slight upgrade for about £100.

£80 or so for lines and £20 for good brake fluid.

Ant, as you've read some guys have a little squeal at times and some never do, in a recent GB on sxoc forum, out of 15 sets sold only 1 reported a little squeal at times, however the perfromance of them more than makes up for it  Add Danny's brake bracket brace as well and you will see a massive difference to the way yer car stops and feels when braking.

As for being in stock at the 25th is anybody's guess mate, i have 6 sets in now, which may or may not sell. I'll accept a post dated cheque or deposit to sort you out, brake wise that is :)

just drop me a mail to smithy@manx.net

cheers

Where's the best place to buy ss lines and fluid? I've read a few posts which say that some of the lines have the wrong connectors on, so which are the ones to get?

I hear Goodrich do a set for the 300ZX. There must be some trader on here who can supply them. Not 100% on the cost though.

Brake fluid hmmmm. AY3388 may have some Castrol top quality stuff. Deamon tweeks may have something like that too.

I have a Goodridge set going spare, PM me if you're interested...
