I'm in need of help!

Went to go out in the Z this afternoon and started her up (not used for just over a week) and it started okay and sounded fine, then after about 50 yards it sounded like it was missing, popping......

....And wouldn't go over 2000-2500 revs....

Went back home lifted the bonnet while running and 'wiggled' the TPS connection and the idle/running picked up and sounded okay, so I took it off cleaned it and put it back on, started it up and all sounded great, gave it a 'quick' touch on the throttle and it sounded fine....

....went out of my road onto the open bit by mine and went to give it some stick, 2500 revs and nothing, no higher and sounded like it was a controlled missing, am I in safety boost (gauge only goes to 0, so I'm guessing I am)...

....The other thing I want to know is, if there was a fault picked up by the engine due to the TPS in the first place would I need to reset the ECU even though I have now sorted the TPS problem and it's not an issue but the safety boost is still there until I reset the ECU??

Cheers,

Matty.

that isnt safety boost, mate. there should not be a misfire and i think safety is about 0.4-5 bar? deff not zero. sounds electronic. is your battery flat?

The revs not rising above a level usually means the MAS is not working.

With saftey boost the car works fine, but the boost is dropped and the timing changes.

Sounds like the AFM is knackered Matty:(

MAS is that the same as what MAC is talking about (MAF) or different??

Easy job to replace??

The MAS is piss easy to change. Its the sensor above the air filter. They are very expensive to buy new.

Try taking it off and giving the contacts a clean. Lets hope its just that.

yup, air mass meter, MAS, MAF etc.

its easy to do, but there not cheap & second hand ones can be hard to come by.

its what the air filter bolts on to under the cover between the headlamps :)

Thanks for the advice/help fella's!!

I'm off to clean stuff up and cross my fingers........gotta love this place for instant help!

I'll post back later to see if it works.....

If not anyone got a second hand one?? I'm sure I read that new ones were about £200!!! :(

Matty Ask Vijay he has a contact that supplies thousands at a time:D:D;) a new one will set you back around £280 ish:(

There are ones on Ebay every now and then for £100 or so.

I believe Zevans got an engine from a write off maybe they have the MAS going too. Why not ask?

If you end up needing it that is.

From what I can tell there is no visable damage to the MAS (MAF) and all looks good with signs of corrosion on the connections, will the MAS just give up so to speak??

I have tried an ECU reset and it's still the same lumpy 2500 revs and 0 on the boost gauge....

Vijay, looks like I need one, how do you want paying?? ;)

Matty.

I presume you have done an ECU check?

Erm.........no......

What code am I looking for??

I'll go do a check then.....

Matty.

12 Air flow meter circuit (AFM or MAF)

The air flow meter circuit is open or shorted

(An abnormally high or low voltage is entered)

Stu,

Just been out and did the ECU test 6 times......(just to be sure...LOL) and each time it was code 55..........

.....I've ordered a new MAF from Vijay, so I'm banking on it being this problem although I have only the code 55 shown, but it still is giving me only 2500 revs after cleaning the connections, checking for damaged wires and cleaning the 'hot wire'.

are you running an induction kit or air filters that use oil it seems llike the MAS is contaminated

sounds daft but try and blow an air drier onto it on the mid warm not hot setting

directly onto the sensing element do this with the battery dissconected to re set the ECU at the same time

put heat on it for about 15 minutes and leave it for a good hour to re stabalise

reconnect battery and try the motor

steve

Do you wanna try mine bud!

Rich:)

Just wanted to say, problem sorted and BIG thanks to Vijay.

Thanks for the offers of donor parts (Chunk, B19RKS, etc..) and the advice.

I'd be lost without this place!! ;)

Matty.

I guess it must have been.

Cleaning the wires in the MAF never worked for me, the only solution was to replace it. My brothers went west too, seems to be a common fault on the zed.

was it the MAF?

Yes Mike, it just stopped working!! I might have a go at re-soldering the joint s and trying it, you never know it might have been a 'dry joint' but I honestly think it's just had enough!!! :(

Anyway I'm zedding again thanks to Vijay.

:)
