Welcome Chris!

The 'auto' turns the air con on and 'econ' runs the heater without the air con.

Otherwise the number is temperature, the number of fan blades lit if fan speed and the arrows pointing show where the air is blowing.

The radio won't pick up many UK stations without a band extender (about £20). I'm about to have my jap spec stereo replaced with a UK one as the Jap one's not removable and I think someone'll break in and knacker the car doing so.

Some coincidence there, I've been a fan since owning a Turbo'd Bluebird. Did you have an S13 in between??

Are there different air con units then? I don't have fan blade lights or arrows showing where the air is blowing (it seems to come out of all of the vents at the same time!).

You have a series 1 Air Con system.

Basic controls are

Up and Down, changes the desired temperature.

Auto, the air con will automatically blow hot or cold air and automatically select the fan speed to make the cabin temperature reach your selected vaule. Ie if you select 20ºC and the cabin is 23ºC it will blow cold air until the temperature drops to 20ºC and then keep it at that temperature. If the inside temperature is colder, it will blow warm air to it rise the temperature.

Econ, Econermy mode. This turns off the air con compressor as it takes engine power and makes the MPG drop a little. The air will not be as cold as it would with it off.

Rec, Recirculation mode. This will take air from inside the car to cool or heat. This is good when going past a smelly field or stuck behind a smelly car as it will keep using the none smelly air from inside the car. It is also good for very hot or very cold days. On hot days it will take the already cooled air from inside the car and make it colder, it better than taking the really hot air from outside. Just the same with cold days. Its better to reheat the warm air inside than the cold outside air.

*WARNING* Recurculation mode will turn off after 20mins or so. This is to prevent the air inside the car getting stale.

Off, turns off the air con.

Hi Lo, Sets the fan speed manually.

If you use Rec, Econ or manual fan speeds it will turn off the Auto mode.

Front windscreen button. This will blow full power on the windscreen to defrost it.

Hope this helps. I may have forgotten something as I have not sat in my Z for a few months now.

Welcome to the car forums version of Broadmoor Chris, may you long enjoy your stay mate.

Anyone know if you can upgrade from series 1 to series 2 AC easily?

Or is it more hassle than it's worth?
