Got nailed last night, still trying to get rid of it, anyone got any advice???

Yeah, always run a properly configured firewall, always have up-to-date virus protection (and I mean daily, not occasionally), have your machine use WindowsUpdate and install ALL the security patches, don't forget the Microsoft Office updates (if you have it), install something like Ad-Aware or Pest Patrol, never open email attachments from people you don't recognise and even if you do recognise them don't open .exe's, .zip's, .scr's etc etc without scanning them first.

Oh, and don't run M$ Windows, but even that doesn't guarantee excemption from problems these days .... :(

Happy days !

Un bloody fortunatly sassa was the least of my wories. Spent most of last night reinstalling after a format. loaded XP pro-Office and the screen went black with just the mouse visible. Arrrg here we go.

reboot

install norton web pro, half way through screen wnet black so went to bed.

Woke up this morning and rebooted. Mannaged this time to finish norton.

Ran scan, nothing. not a hint.

Rang my brother (works for microsoft).

conclusion, some little fook has targeted my ID and has hacked through and is hitting me with this junk.

Now have firewall up again with only 1 port open and have had to turn sound off because nortons alerting me every 30 seconds or so.

At least I might get some bloody work done.

I wouldnt bother with Norton, its past its day. I had a virus on my computer and I found the file and sent it to Norton. I got an email back telling me what virus it is and that the next patch will detect it but the next patch wont be out for another 2 weeks  So I had to wait another 2 weeks before the program will get rid of it.

AVG there are updates nearly everyday.

AVG is an excellent free virus scanner, blows Norton out the water.

Mr. P, question for you mate, my Bro probably hasn't updated his PC in ages from Microshaft so I went and sorted it today but it said there were no critical patches/updates to apply.

So what's the scorio with this new virus?

He did need some updates but they were mainly XP software related, sh1te like Windows Media Player etc. Nowt important.

Do a windows update mate this update will stop you from getting Sassa hit your start menu at the top hit windows update then wait for the page to fully load, then click scan for updates or somthing like that, then update all crucial only one of the crucial is the update for Sassa but you might aswell do the lot while your there.

I think the default setting for XP is to run the auto-update process locally, it then notifies you whether there are updates available and will even download automatically ready for install if you configure it that way - maybe he's done that already.

Anyway, you should also run something like Adaware, which will remove all the dodgy cookies from the dodgy webshites you've been visiting !

Also, make sure the firewall s/w is up to date - most the the decent ones have auto-update buttons these days.

The SASSER virus infects the windows operating system directly via the internet, it is not piggy-packing on an e-mail attachment.

I have NORTON 2004 and it didnt get this one. I agree, Norton is shite. I think I'll un-install this and run AVG.

I have got rid of the virus via the patches on the Microshaft Update site and so far so good!!!!

Cheers

I have the panda quick remover to remove the sasser virus if anyone wants it just type ur email

Just make sure you set the update schedule to every day, not the default of every 14 days (or whatever it is)
