Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone used to own a sierra Cosworth ? I have been a mad cossie fan for 3 years now but am finally fed up of constantly having to do work on her ... think it's time to go Japanese!

I am definitely a big 300zx fan and was wondering how the twin turbos compare (acceleration, handling, trouble wise) to a 270bhp rwd cossie.

Any comparisons would be really welcome,

My dad owned a RWD Sierra Cosworth for a few years, they are a very fast car.

He has owned a few cars even a Porsche 911 and he said the Cosworth was better.

However he has driven my ZX and said that it's better than the Cosworth. Although it wasn't a modified Cosworth.

He says the 300ZX handled better, as the rear of the Cosworth was a little tail happy, but he never remembered the front giving way.

The 300ZX is probably the opposite. Even though the back will come out but it will be due to too much power while cornering. If you dont have too much power you will find the front on a 300ZX will start to give way first.

You have to look at the perpose of the cars. The Cosworth is a fantastic car in its class and I would class it as a hot hatch. Cosworth got a Sierra chassis and put new suspention on it, wheels, engine parts, brakes etc. Nissan started with a blank peice of paper and designed it all with the spec in mind.

0-60 with a Cosworth and stock 300ZX, I would say the Cosworth may have a slight advantage becuase its quite a bit lighter. But the extra torque from the extra litre and V6 configuration as soon as the cars are into 2nd gear, the 300ZX will pull away from the Cosworth.

As for working on the car. Most 300ZX are only a little younger than a RWD Cosworth and would still have problems due to age. However, 300bhp for a 3 litre twin turbo has a lot less stress on engine parts than a 270bhp 2 litre single turbo, especially when the engine was only designed for 225bhp (If I remember correctly)

There are a couple of nice 300ZXs for sale at the moment on the For Sale section.

Try get a ride in a 300ZX. Its the only real way you can find out.

I had a near stock 2WD (about 260bhp) and it was fun, but even with that low tune it was undrivable in the damp, not even to mention the wet.

A few mate's still have cossie's, both sierra and escort, one of which is a 2WD running 32psi, before anyone asks no i don't know what turbo, blah blah blah.....

.....But every time i've been out in it, it has scared the shite outta me.

I had mine over 4 years ago now and TBH i don't miss it a bit.

All the best, Get a Z.

Rich:D

ive owned both although the saph was a 4x4 and id have the cossie any day over the 300 if you think fixing the cossie is bad wait till you start getting skanked for 300 bits. cossie parts and mods are way cheaper and are always easy to get

I'll second that.

Heh heh - so am I right in thinking that the 300zx's can take a lot of looking after too!? I would have defended my cossie until I was foaming at the mouth but looking back over the past 3 years she has been constant trouble!

A wise man once said ... if it has wheels or noorks, expect trouble.

Thankg God they haven't made a car with noorks.

Dunno, most saxos seem to have a couple of tits in 'em.

I'll second that.

i'll third it!

One word - Ford! Always cheaper parts and more readily available and they probably have a much bigger tuning side than the 300zx:(

But do the Z's have the same Fix Or Repair Daily reputation ?

Do a lot of things go wrong with the Z or are they quite good at stock/mildly tuned power ?

Just stripping my cossie head in my bedroom! I swear for the 3 years I have had it it has been undrivable for 6months, running at reduced power for 6months, on ramps for several days. When she was running well tho she was so good it almost makes it worth it!

Still ... you gotta love the look of the Z from the front!
