doesnt seem a bad thing if the data isnt good enough to prosecute. Just like an extension of the gaps between the white lines changing at a hazard

The report on the radio stated that that would be using the information gatered to display the Reg numbers of speeding cars on boards at the side of the road, if that's the case then the OCR system works, then X-ref with PNC/DVLA etc and you've got a NIP in 14 days!

Won't do it! Balls, of course that will, think of the revenue. That Bitch frome BRAKE will be in GMTV singing it's praises soon.

Tim

you do know that there are systems across the uk that already do this?

you know those black squares before traffic lights? they are inductive loops that can calculate the speed of cars passing over them and adjust traffic signals accordingly

Yep, it's the camera OCR aspect that I don't like Mike. It's all just a little too Big Brother for my liking.

Tim

Yet again the motorist is public enemy number one  :xxx:

I can just see the emergency cabinate meeting being called in the next couple of years to find out why 30,000,000 of us are out of work. Well, dow erm, because no one got a licence. We've all been fooking banned.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I lost my licence I would be totally fooked.

Nearest town 7.5 miles

2 busess a day

Thats alot of cycling.

2 besses a day! We have 2 busses a week!

I even have to drive to the Post office, I had a row with the Tax man about my motoring allowances!!

Somehow you need to make your car a 'tool of your trade' they are then legally unable to take your licence away.

Tim

you are legally alllowed to keep tools of the trade when you go bankrupt, i didn't know htere was a law that allowed you to keep your hammer if you put it through someones head though, speeding is breaking the law......

heard on radio kent this morning that speed camera's have no effect on saving lives!

with more camera's now than ever, the death rate on our roads are still increasing!!

just another form of taxation?

me, selling Z :(

going to live abroard in tenerife in july

Arthur

arthur: whilst i hate speed cameras, the only way to proove they do not effect deaths on our roads is to turn them all off for a year and compare data.

deaths may be going up but this may be due to other factors such as more drivers and worse roads ect, however the introduction of speed cameras probably slows the increase of death statistics.

These are not speed camera.

They are cats eyes which light up and dont rely on reflecting light. They are very good as you can see the outline of the road as far as you can see and not just past the beam of your lights.

They can also change colour to help road saftey. If you are catching up to a car infront, they will change colour or start to flash. Same with oncoming traffic or if there is an accident and they could also change colour if you are belived to be speeding.

They work by detecting where you are by detecting your head lights. As you go past a cats eye, your head lights wont be shining on the light sensor, so it knows you have gone past. It can estimate how fast you are going by the time it takes to go past each cats eye, or probably ever 3 or 4 cats eye. That is it. No radar, just light.

This is not enough to prove you are speeding. For example, you could be traveling at the correct speed and the car behind you is speeding but as you travel past the cats eye, the car lights behind you trip it off again before it detects you have gone past. And if this car is speeding it will just think it is 1 car with very bright lights and its speeding. Not 1 car traveling correctly and the one behind going too fast.

This is NO WAY, these can be used for speed cameras. For starters there is no camera in the world which can take a photo of a number plate when its got headlights shining directly at it, and if so the detection of speed is no where near accurate enough. Even with radar, it would have to point upwards where trees, birds or even litter can set it off.

I wish people would stop being paranoid. Yes there are too many cameras in this country, but that is what a Labour government has done. 2 other parties have said they will slash the number of speed camera. Already there are a number of councils around the country who have taken down speed camera and speed bumps.

However this doesnt mean that every thing that is in place on the roads is to catch people speeding. I have driven on a road which have these lights and they are fantastic. They detect where are on the road and light up the next 1 or 2 miles of road but if there is nothing coming the other way, the cats eyes behind you are off. Yon when a car is coming because you notice the cats eyes in your mirrors are turned on.

These are a fantasitc idea, one of a very small amount of ideas which actually do make make roads safer.

FFS Stuart, you should be on bloody Mastermind. You have an answer for everything!

It has been reported on the BBC news twice so far today that Reg numbers of speeding motorists will be displayed on signs at the side of the road, however the BBC Scotland news web site does not make refence to this.

Oh, I don't know which road you have driven because the M8 is the first in the UK.

LOL do you know this as fact? Another point - if a car took longer to pass a cats-eye (car behinds lights) then it will think you are going SLOWER ;) Its a crap system - the more you take away from a driver, the less they have to concentrate, and therefore the less they will concentrate, making for more dangerous roads..... Amen...

I have been on a road in the Lakes. They dont change colour like the ones on the M8 but the do light up, which is really strange, because you can see this snake of cats eyes going into the distance for miles, and they turn off a few mins after you pass.

The speed camera which display your number plate, do they actually give you a ticket? I though it was more to embarass you to slow down, or to inform you that you are speeding.

I have gone past a similar thing, do 38 in what I though was a 30mph zone. I saw a sign saying, "LIMIT 30 YOUR SPEED 38" and I slowed down straight away, which is a lot safer than just giving me a ticket and me carrying on down the road at a what they call, an unsafe speed.

They do work. I slowed down what is what the council say the want to do. If there is a speed camera 200 yards further on, fair enough I was warned.!

Stuart

ANYTHING that has the ability to read your speed and registration WILL be used in the future for raping motorists. When traffic master first introduced their system (reading the middle 4 digits of the number plate) the government forced them to make the sytem upgradable to be used for full plate capture - wonder where that was heading.... Oh actually I think they admitted it lol...

Yep, I remember this, Traffic Master resisted releasing their data to the Govt authorities, it was at this point that they were threatened with perverting the course of justice by witholding evidence of a crime, that crime being speeding.

Just how many of those blue boxes are there out there?

What I was meant to say is if 2 cars a close, it will only be able to detect the 2nd car.

What are you taking away from the driver? Sorry you are Nigel Mansell aren't you, your the worlds greatest driver. Sorry you are 4 Nigel Mansells becuase he is so fat and you are a weedy fooker!

Can you please tell me how making the cats eyes light up so they dont rely on reflecting head lights takes away from the driver and makes the road more dangerous? By that logic taking away cats eyes altogether will make you driver better. How about take the lines off too, or how about taking your head lights off?

A little extreme you think? According to you, making the road layout brighter is more dangerous, so by that logic making it darker makes it safer?

Or are you talking from your personal experience, so infact it is YOU who pays less attention when the road lay out is better lit? If so that makes you a shit driver!

SORRY! Your Nigel Mansell! I forgot.

What exactly does it take away from the driver Andy? Does it take the steering from the driver? Does it take the accelerator from the driver?

PMSL :D So you're telling me, if you were sat in the comfort of your seat, with nothing to do, you wouldn't start drifting off? The point I'm making, is that the less active the mind is, the less it responds to situations. Taking away headlights would be a bit silly too really - how would I see where I was going? :p Headlights aren't a driver aid - they are to overcome the weakness of the human body to see in the dark ;) Anyway that was a shit arguement cos Z headlights are feck all use anyway :p

So, does that make it a little more clear? Less of the name calling too thanks - much appreciated :D
