I think that Garage's that do M.O.T.'s are a conflict of interest, like so many things in this country that are institutionally wrong.

 

In many countries they have M.O.T. type vehicle roadworthiness examinations and they are dedicated Government run institutions, with fully trained examiners. I think this way you would see a lot more well kept cars in this country, u know the old 'trader that knows the Garage owner 'M.O.T.' would cease to exist.

 

One of my workmates just put his car into 3 different places all giving completely different results, one looking for £400 to do the required work whereas the other one that gave a truthful diagnosis was only £65 to replace a steering rack boot & sort out the tracking & adjust headlights :rolleyes:

My car had illegal number plates, 1 illegal tyre, a parking break well under MOT limit, emissions too high (due to me playing with TC and having tones of fuel in zorst!)

 

What can I say, I got it passed!

 

Having said that, all other three tyres were brand new I'd just spent 450.00 on three and ran out of cash, the number plate, well who cares?, just replaced the rear brake pads but havnt put new shoes on yet but will do, and the emissions, well usualy it ok.

 

If I'd have turned up to my mate with a rusty shed he would have still told me to **** off, the diff being, he could see I was serious about maintaining it, and he knew I would be good to my word and be doing it.

 

But, I agree with you, too many cut and shut rusty shine over shit getting MOTD to sell at dodgy garages to unsuspecting peeps, thats my prob!

Have to agree with this, while one garage had to change a headlight, another had to do the headlight, 3 tyres, rear brakes and the exhaust was leaking.

 

It would be good if the MOT garage wasn't able to repair what they diagnose, someone like my mum would have fallen for it and paid god knows how much.

This happened to me with my daily runner of my Corsa about 2 months ago.

 

Took it to 1 place and had about 5-6 things wrong with it, including 2 new tyres. I didnt agree with half of the things they said and I repaired the ones which I inspected and thought to be OK.

 

I then took it to another place where, after not fixing half of the things it failed on first time, and it passed but needed a little bit of welding on the sill under the drivers door. I didnt really look there but it could have been rusted and I trust this person more.

 

But the 2 failed tyres, badly aimed headlight and handbrake which it failed on first time, it passes on with out having to touch them.

I always stay with the car at MOT time and if it fails i get them to show me what and why it faild. I also use the same garage every time, as i know them and put a lot of busness there way too.

garages, whether MOT stations or otherwise are much the same as any trade - theres always poor ones out there that give everyone else a bad name :(

 

find a good reputable garage & use it.
