took the car out yesterday on short trip to pick my brother up from college and th weather was really nice, a lot warmer than it has been for ages.

after parking up i went out to fix a wobbly passenger mirror and noticed there was a small stream of liquid coming from under the car. had a peek underneath and the leak had definatetly stopped and it looked like it was under the radiator.

so popped up the bonnet and saw that the top of the rad were the cap goes was all wet, cap was screwed on. is this supposed to happen? i really dont have the foggiest

yaseen

ps. fixed th wobbly mirror, the metal plate that the screws went into had cracked apart so just superglue gelled it backed together n its fixed! screws were a bitch to get back in tho

The radiator cap is like a valve. If the pressure gets too much it releases it through the cap spilling water, its better than blowing a hose or gasket.

It could be as simple as the rad cap is old, not working as it should and releasing the pressure too soon.

Simpelist things first ;)

NOPE!!!!

The cap releases the pressure into the OVERFLOW RESERVOIR lol

so does that mean my cap aint working as it should andy or maybe the overflow reservoir is blocked up?

For what it cost i would try a new cap first then if its still the same look again!

Are you POSITIVE the cap was on properly?

how?? it vents to atmosphere!

The rad cap is spring loaded - when the pressure is too great the spring is pushed up and you should see in the neck of the radiator a small tube snaking off down into the depths of the car - this hole gets exposed and vents the water down there.

Rich,It only does that if your rubber pipe is missing on the rad neck;)

yes it was defo on properly cos i could feel th pressure when i turned it open to test it, obviously i didnt open it

Had the same problem on my old 928.......steam was coming out of the top because too much pressure built up and it was old, bought a new one and all worked well,i think they're on a couple of quid......

I had this problem on my old Radiator, the thread that the cap goes onto was worn enough just to leave a small gap (nats nut.....technical term ;) )

It did mean I had to replace the rad to resolve the problem (plus it had a small crack too!!)

Have a look on the underside of the radiator 'lip' where the cap screws on and see if it is worn.....just a suggestion.
