What size speakers can I fit in the door inplace of the original speakers

A 6.5 inch dia speaker should fit straight into the standard hole. I am currently fitting a set of Pioneer component speakers into my car and have, so far, encountered the following problems:

A) Speaker depth, the new one is considerably deeper than than the original fit and as a result fouled one the window when this was lowered.

B) Although the hole in the door is big enough for the speaker the "flange" for speaker attachment was too narrow which resulted in the new speaker not seating correctly.

To overcome both of these problems a have cut a spacer ring from MDF for each side, I have used 12mm board as this is a good compromise between bring the speaker "forward" in the door but not so far that it touches the original fitment grilles in the door card. I have also "Flared" the ring so that it is thinner where it sits against the door and wider where the speaker goes to accomodate the size differences.

I have mounted the Tweeters on the black plastic triangle that covers the outside door mirror location.

I hope this helps and has not been to long-winded an explanation.

Cheers, Jonezy.

my 5.25" MB quart's fitted straight in. Managed to get the tweeters under the standard grille as well, so didn't have to bother finding an alternative mounting place for them.

CheerZ John...just made me a happy bunny!

I ordered a set of 2 x 5.25" and 2 x 4" Rockford Fosgates for my Merc. Well that didn't quite work out so I thought I'd put them in the Z instead. So looks like the 5's will be going in the doors then...excellent!

6x9's do fit straight in if you remove the metal backing plate.

You might wanna firm em up with an MDF batton tho.

Glen.
