I know there has been much talk about the prop shaft bearing but is there any sure tests i can do to see if this is the culprit of my low tone vibration. Its not disturbing to say the least but you know what its like;once you notice somthing it seems to get worse. I think they call it sycosymatic(if thats how you spell it!!!). Ive checked the wheel bearings; they are ok, and the vibration does'nt come through the steering. Does it cost alot to resolve?

Interestingly, I just had my clutch replaced and prior to that I was getting quite a noticeable vibration but only sitting at really low revs and trying to pull away eg. in 4th at 30mph and putting the foot down a little, until the car stopped labouring it would vibrate.

It turned out that the bolts on the drive shaft weren't entirely screwed in correctly and that was the cause, once the guys fixed that I have had no problems. Check it is something as daft as that first.

I was about to post a similar question. I bought my car about 9 months ago, I noticed the "typical" 30 - 50 mph vibration, especially when cold. I replaced the rear gearbox mount, which did not solve a thing, and I doubt that it is ever a cause of this type of vibration. So, my nexxt project is to replace the prop shaft centre bearing, I think about £150 just for the part.

However, when I think about it, the vibration, while a bit annoying, is not that bad, and is tolerable. The import thing is, does it get worse, and cause serious damage ? Mine has been the same since I bought it, no worse.

I wondered about that, in the interests of saving myself a couple of hundred quid - but I've decided that a "slight vibration" is not going to do the bits attached at each in any good in the long run. Better a centre bearing now than a new diff and a new clutch later!

Mine hasn't got any better or worse, except it is related to the external temp on cold starts, so is worse some mornings.

(In my case it might be something bolted incorrectly anyway, I should find out today!)

Mine was the same symtoms and it was definitely the centre bearing.

to check for play on the propshaft, jack the car up under the diff so that wheels are off the ground and see if there is any movement on the propshafts. Sometimes it's easier to replace the diff if it is the inner bearings.
