Since I bought her a year ago, I've only ever filled her up with 97+, sometimes using octane booster on top of that. She's always run really well on it, so I've never thought to change to somethiong different. I drove down to North cornwall over the weekend and managed to forget that 97+ is almost unheard of once you leave the A30. I had to fill up on regular 95ron, much to my concern. Imagine my surprise when she actually feels more responsive! She's running so well in fact, that I filled up again on 95 on purpose. Question is, if it safe to do so, or does the enigne actually need 97-98 for long term benefits?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Ch

UK cars should be fine, however I think Jap cars are setup for their fuel (100 ron?) so I think Jap cars benefit more.

Personally I only run my UK TT on Optimax.

Yeah, mine's a jap, and I've only ever run her on Optimax before this.

Optimax is much better than standard unleaded.

Since chipping the car and upping the boost, Ive run it on unleaded once, and on full boost there was the sound of detonation. Only for a second, mind. But from then on its only had Optimax.

Apart from on Sunday ;) Had to fill up on the motorway with BP Ultimate. No dett, always good. Then I read in Japanese performance Mag that BP Ultimate is 102 RON???

I thought they'd just rebranded the SUL, and put the cost up by about 8p a litre.

Thoughts please?

and with OPtimax you can collect top trump cards too!

This is a problem I have here in Grantham, we no longer have a Shell station ( nearest one is about 15 miles away), and the BP has stopped selling Ultimate  So do any other petrol companies do a decent higher octane fuel suitable for our cars? Although I have found that the Esso station in Melton does do SuperPlus, but then we dont have an Esso either.............. god it's a dump in Grantham.

Yes, but Ultimate is chocked full of cleaning additives. I filled mine up on it just once when it first came out and she ran like a dog for three days!

Hmm, mine ran fine. Although i didnt push it as hard as I would with Optimax.

Doesnt Optimax have loads of cleaning agents in it as well?

Does anyone have a good knowledge of these fuels? All you can get off of the manufacturers websites is PR rubbish.

You can always use octane booster in standard unleaded, but you have to fill up from empty (or exactly half tank) to get the proportion right. A mate of mine has been doing this in his Corrado VR6 for years now.

from the BP website:

BP Ultimate Unleaded has a research octane level of 97, which is higher than standard unleaded petrol, which has a research octane level of 95. This, on average, gives increased power in certain vehicles.

Optimax is much better than standard unleaded.

BP Ultimate is only 97 RON in the UK.

Shell Optimax is 98 RON.

You takes your choice.

;)

from the shell website:

Shell Optimax has the highest octane specification of any petrol available on UK forecourts. It is greater than 98 Research Octane Number (RON).

I am not too good with engines but, the cars timing setup will be all important in which fuel is good or bad.

I have an import and was using Optimax for a while but the pick up was poor and was pinking if I sat really low revs. Changed to the Ultimate and the difference was immediately noticeable, much more responsive low down but I think it maybe struggles just a touch when fully lit.

I also get better fuel consumption out of the Ultimate and as I use the car everyday it makes sense for me. Different horses........
