Hi, this may sound a bit stupid but how can you tell when your coolant is at maximum capacity (ie. filled up to the top) ???

I tried to use the wierd tube thing but I couldn't really tell where the mark was! So I kept filling it up until it suddenly started p*ssing out from underneath the car! (not out of the top as I expected)

Is it just me or is the 'tube thing' very hard to read??? and how do you know when you are coming to the 'top' of the filler? - ie. in most normal cars there is a filler bottle where you can see when you are about to reach the top.

Sorry for such a silly post but it's just a bit annoying...

Cheers

You remove the bleed screw on the driver's side of the rad and fill the radiator up via the rad cap and it doesn't really matter if you overfill the reservoir as it will just spill on the floor!

Tube thingy?? Do all Z's have this? the onlt thing i have with that device is my windscreen washer bottle. My rad has no 'thingy' only a cap on the rad. Is this because its a jap import. I have also read some other threads and people say they they have a header tank? Just wondering?

My import has the "weird tube thingy" its on the left of the radiator and looks like a washer bottle I guess.

LH and RH always refers to if you are sitting in the car, getting round the problem of people who drive on the wrong side of the road!

Yosh,

What you filled up is the radiator expansion tank. This tank is used by the radiator to dump excess coolant in when the engine is hot and suck it back into the coolant track when required. Follow Mark's (Topless) directions on how to fill the radiator - make sure you bleed the system to ensure there isn't an airlock. With the radiator filled to capacity the expansion tank should have roughly 1/2 a litre of coolant in it. I agree that it's difficult to guage how much fluid is in there by looking at the plastic dipstick. The expansion tank is made in two parts (the reservoir and a neck/filler tube) and where these two meet is where excess coolant leaks onto the road. If that happens you have too much fluid in the expansion tank. Not to worry but you'll probably see more fluid being dumped onto the road after a run.

The "header tanks" you refer to are actually part of the radiator. If you look down onto the radiator you can see at either side of the radiator - they are the black plastic end bits that run from top to bottom and have the transmission feed lines on the LHS and the top water hose on the RHS.

For instructions on how to bleed the radiator after filling it up do a search on this forum - it's a bit long winded to add to this post.

Cheers!
