Yes this seems common.

Done away with the cats and now has smoke from the left zorst intermittantly on idle. Could the PVC be the problem? I've seem a lot of posts about them. If worst case, Where's the best place to have my tubs reconed?

Full symptoms: -

Does it more when cold, only on idle, no smoke at all when moving?

Only from the passanger side, drivers fine other than usual steam type.

Sometimes its fine once warm.

When it does smoke, hold the revs at 2k and it stops.

Smoke as soon as the engine was started after new zorst.

Zorst fitted Friday now Monday.

Help?

Rossy this really needs to be in the Help and Advice section :nono: any way tbh mate this was exactly what happened to mine and many others within a short time of changing the exhaust and gutting the cats , (mine was within 10 mins of new exhaust) sounds like your Tub oil seals are shot if the smoke is blue and not white or black.

Ryan

So i take it you have just de-catted the car? Did it smoke at all before? It does should like Turbo seals to me, it should show up worst after you've been booting it and are letting the car cool down on idle.

Oops, at work and wasn't paying atension. Can it be moved?

It has Never ever smoked at all in the 8-9 months I have owned it until the cats got binned.

Before the cats had been gutted, so con't understand?

If I boot it and stop to idle it more often than not does not do it.

Strange.

I remember seeing something that may explain this in one of the various Technical FAQ's and buying guides I've recently read. Anyway, here goes.

Apparently it is not uncommon for steam to come from only one exhaust pipe at idle, this is because at these low RPM's there isn't enough pressure to force the exhaust gasses out of both pipes and as a result the gasses take the path of least resistance. At higher RPM's the pressure increases and the exhaust gasses should come out both pipes.

Now removing the CAT will have changed the back pressure in your exhaust , it'll be more free flowing due to reduced back pressure, and as a result I imagine that as long as it is only steam thats coming out of your exhaust you should have nothing to worry about*.

I may be wrong, in which case I'm sure somebody will correct me if I am.

*A lot of steam is also a sign that your HG may be about to go, check for low coolant levels and/or do a compression test if your worried about this.

I know steam is normal, its the oil smoke that worries me.

I have no H pipe so each side of the engine has a seperate exhaust.

Smoke that smells of burnt oil only comes out of the passanger side exhaust!

Only and idle, and is completly fine when driving.

It does sound to me like the oils seals, but having read other posts on the PVCs wanted feedback on wether they could cause the same simptoms.

As I said the tubs are from the exterior in very good cond. Boost is fine and theres no smoke at all when driving at any speed.

Could the passenger side PVC being faulty cause smoke at idle only intermittantly?

Could be - but very unlikely given the background. It's a good idea to check the cheapest cause first though! The PCV's aren't that hard to replace and the parts aren't expensive. Sounds like the seals to me though. Happens to us all in the end.

Good luck mate -

I am need of changing my car's exhaust, and was going to take away the cats.

If the oil sills go when you change your exhaust, how much does it cost to get them fixed. My car is stock, and has the origanal exhaust on it still.

If the seals are worn you'll know as soon as you take the cats off (you'll get the dreaded smoke). Cheapest thing to do is put the cats back on! Failing that it'll be a lot to fix the problem. The engine's usually got to come out which will be between £700 and £1000 labour, add to that new standard turbos at c.£500 each or c.£400 each to recondition your old ones. If you're going to the trouble of taking the engine out, you may as well upgrade the turbos. Speak to Smithy about his upgrades.

Quoted £800 to take tubs off and refit new/recon or hybids back on.

So then its just the tubs.

£300 ish each to recon. But still shopping around.

So £1400 + Vat owch!

Speak to SE - they do the work for £700 inclusive of VAT

The fact that it smokes when on idle and not when driving is the most common way to suspect turbo seal failure, it's oil seeping through when everythings come to a stop inside turbo. The fact it's only side could also suggest that just one has been done before, not uncommon, just foolish. SE do charge 700 all in for labour on turbo swap and endless choices of turbo's to choose from, recon your existing is not bad choice, but 99.9% just buy hrbrids for that extra few quid. Don't fall into the trap though of cheapest is best, as in the long run with labour costs being high, once there on they want to stay on ! so with de-catting, race spec stagger gap piston ring seals on the turbo's are the way to go. I believe am the only company in UK to offer these on Zed turbo's as STANDARD.

And so whats the score?

I send you my tubs on exchange or do you recon mine and send back?

Whats the cost? david.ross@porschesc.f2s.com

Not quite mate, look in my section of traders area or website for more info, but basically i send you some hybrids and you just post back by parcel force yer old knackered ones within 28 days. If yer pay yer 20 quid subs their slightly cheaper anyways, I believe the spec of mine make em cheaper than most too.

cheers

Is it deffo blue smoke?

Mine did the same but was black smoke and a new O2 sensor cured it.

mine does the same was told by se that it was not the turbo's, but was the fact that since i had no back pressure in the exhaust and any slight build of pressure in the crankcase will result in this. guess pcv need changing plus breather kit. more money
