Now running Optimax, with a bit more mapping, boost at ~1.3 bar (~20 PSI)...

485.8 bhp (flywheel) @ 7693 rpm :)

Twin-pop is probably next ;)

:) nice one dude

its about whats at the wheels though ;)

ill be able to hear it starting up soon from my front garden moha

Boo Hiss ;)

Well done mate, more of the figure I would expect. Just been to see Pete and he said he's done the mapping. (zoiks)

Although the car still is not over 400 bhp  He's trying to sell me vernier pullies now :o

I'll pick up the Zed tomorrow and see the graph, then I've got something to compare against.

Nice one.

Whats the power at the wheel? Is there still a huge difference?

  • Author

Dave - hope you don't mind... I was in the passenger seat helping sort out your car  Very interesting stuff. I reckon I could get right into the "assistant mapping engineer" job ;) Yours was pulling, alright. It's weird tho - as Pete was pointing out, your turbos spin up so quick, you're at your target boost before the engine's really ready to do anything with it. Mine's making power before the boost is peaking, then goes on to make some more. Your rear-wheel figure is probably more - I can't remember to be honest. I almost came home with your rolling-road plot too by accident.

You know what, guys? Rear-wheel bhp /isn't/ where it's all at, unless you're trying to compare how quick car-x is to car-y. What I'm very happy about is that I've paid to have a certain spec engine built, and SE have done it. It's not their fault I've got a cr*ppy gearbox with tons of loss! It came out something like 323 bhp at the wheels. But it simply means if I want more power down on the road, I just change to a manual box. I don't really wanna do that yet cos it's fickin loverly to drive as an auto. But I'm really expecting the poor box to fall to bits eventually, even though it's SE fast-road uprated with a seperate cooler. ~150 bhp is going somewhere - on heat, or swishing ATF around. Shocking really. I've had a word about getting a plot done on another rolling road. That guy says he fully expects the loss figures to come out the same on his because it's not a figure that's typed in - the rolling road works it out on the run down. We'll see.

Did I say? - I'm chuffed :D

Sorry I just wanted to know the wheel BHP as that is what a dyno measures. The fly is an estimate.

  • Author

The rear-wheel figure is an estimate too ;) The dyno measures wheel speed at a fixed load (which can be inaccurate), which is then recalculated as a torque figure. RPM is calculated from the wheel speed (which can also be inaccurate), and that's part of the calculation in the conversion from torque to bhp (both kinds). Tranny loss is measured on the run down. As it happens, the figure pretty much came out exactly the same as last time. And that's pretty much exactly the same percentage as all the other autos at the SE rolling road day. So estimates, eh? It's gonna cost ya! ;)

The point is Mr Rae ( ;) ) wot I got last time was 432.somink... now, just by up'ing the boost a bit and running better fuel, I've made a chunk more horses.

No need to apologise mate - I know what you meant :) I wouldn't win in a p*ssing competition, I know that. Unless it was a /real/ p*ssing competition, and then I reckon I could drink all night and STILL only have one p*ss :D

LMFAO no way your about the same size as Duff , Mind you I suppose if your drink northern beer like Duff its possible :p ;) :D

good figures by the way mate ;)

  • Author

Ah, but I'm only the same size as Mr Duff when I haven't had a beer! When I've been drinking all night I expand to around the same size as Macca. When I eventually go for a p*ss, it takes a good 12 hours to get my skin to fit my bones properly again ;)

Figures - yeah, it's just a number, innit. I forgot to say: I thought the car was quick before... now it's f*ck-sh*t quick! /And/ it's gonna get quicker! I mean, FFS... I'm running out of ways to describe just how good this feels :)

Ooh, I forgot to say, Dave - verniers are probably a good idea. It might sound like a gimmick, but these were certainly helping Alex's make power. He had verniers on standard cams, right? I originally thought these were pointless without reprofiled cams, but Alex proved that wrong. No disrespect to Alex (considering what's now happened) but your bottom end is built to take more boost so I reckon you'd see a big benefit without as much risk. See what Pete says. If you've got the cash, go for cams too ;)

Hi Si,

Interesting about the verniers, I will have too see what Pete says. I need to look at the graph, also how the car drives. I am not interested in figures now but how it drives, if it's a lot quicker then I am happy. Pete mumbled about burning along the A130 @ 160 which to me is slow, my car used to go upto 180 no probs. If thre's no way further then it may be time to buy a Supra.

I will make sure I have an infomartive techinal chat with Pete as he said there was a breathing problem with my car tonight (there wasn't before). Well lets look .... I have SE stage 2 turbos, very very new SE Air filters, Ported Heads... I need to see what Pete means by breathing as people with less spec have made more power. Pete was very very nice to me tonight but that's Pete, good at putting the good side across. Althogh I got out of him my car does'nt make more than 400bhp, I will need to drive to confirm any change.

I will let you guys know tomorrow when I take my zed out for the first time in 4 weeks. Before it was detting it's nuts off, and runnig out of steam around 160 mph, which is really cack.

If Dave E (ex Se employee) is still working in Chelmsford, I might gove him a call. He set up my car first of all, and it was spot on quick.

I am pissed and grumpy, when I sober up tomorrow, I'll give a better report.

Yeah, I guessed you might be a bit p*ssed or you wouldn't be talking about getting a Supra ;) Gotta admit, I've been there with that thinking  But, really, your car felt good earlier. And I did keep saying to Pete: it's pinking about... there. He knew, but it just felt good to be confirming what he knew. He'll tell you more, and it's not my place to tell you what he done, but the traffic was keeping your car back unfortunately. I /really/ dunno how he does it - it's a f*cking piece of art that he can hammer on that fast, look at what the fuel and timing are doing, flip data in the maps, keep the car in the right lane, and not crash into the guy in front! I /really/ shouldn't be saying this in public... I might get him in trouble! Put it this way, /I/ would've been happy with your car after he'd finished with it - the power through the rev-range was impressive. And with *no* detting! It didn't det on the rolling road either, which is important. I wouldn't have minded taking it out and chucking it about a bit, but it's got one of those new fangled "manual-box" thingumies... what's THAT all about?! :)

I suppose if your drink northern beer

Hold up... did I /look/ like I drink northern beer, FFS?!

Dude... I'm /so sorry/... but, ya know - it's just a good excuse to build it stronger next time, I guess?! I dunno what to say. This is probably just about the worst place to say: if you're running a standard bottom end and you push it beyond 1 bar, it *will* break. Maybe not today. Maybe not even tomorrow?! On the positive side, you did confuse a few people running verniers and making more power than anyone expected. It was looking good for a while. I was impressed, I have to say. More, better, later. Where's that credit card? ;)

Simon, that's becausePETER Ris the man not many come even close:D;)

Pleased you are happy with what he has put together nice one Si;)

A bit off topic but

and then I reckon I could drink all night and STILL only have one p*ss :D

 I'm like a fookin hose pipe dammit! Come teach me!

Ooh I've got a headache now better wait a while before seeing Pete

Thanks for the report Si, I'me glad the car is not detting anymore.

Pete does make me laugh with his driving, I've been down the country lanes, he's doing left foot braking, got his boost guage in one hand, and talking to me. When Pete gets his finger out he can do a good job, which is why I recommend him for tuning. I'me just a bit miffed cos he's always recond I'll break the 400bhp mark easily, well that was the spec I paid for.

I cam back home a bit miffed last night, I was talking to another customer who was there since 1pm to see Pete, and he hadn't. I got there at 6:30pm and waited nearly an hour, for a 10 second conversation. In that hour this other customer and myself wound each other up, winging about the service and quality.

I'ts a nice sunny day in Maldon at the moment, I'll give a performance report later as I think now I need to drive it. (Well I'll drive it later)

Anyone on the A12 beware

I got 403BHP (backed up with 397) in my auto on the same rollers with similar transmission losses and was stripped of the result...

Personally I dont think their auto loss estimate is correct at all.

But good improvemnt from last time mate - cant argue with that :)

Pete

I've seen your plot - you had a ton of wheelspin, so it's bound to work out those runs wrong! :) I should stick a new plot up really, shouldn't I? How did the auto losses compare at Thor? Of course, they work out the auto losses the same as the manual, so if one's wrong, so's the other.

  • Author

Took me ages to draw this... ;)

well, kinda. you work out transmission losses by putting the car into neutral & seeing how much bhp drag is recorded on the dyno. that is your transmission loss.

a manual car is straight forward loss, on an auto youve got all that fluid sloshing about everywhere, doesnt give an accurate measurement really, its a lot higher on an auto than what the loss would be when driving

Took me ages to draw this... ;)

ooh, whats it supposed to be???? let me guess - a horse?? no,no - a pteredactyl???? erm no, hang on - self portrait?

go on - i give in, tell us :D

  • Author

OK, furry muff. So if I empty out the ATF the loss might work out a bit more accurate? ;)

It's a mountain in the saaf of France... cos that's all that's on my mind really at the mo :D All this talk of bhp and cars is pointless really... it'll never be as quick as me flying down a mountain on me snowboard! :)

course not - how the hell would you get a zed up a snow covered mountain?? couldnt even get mine off the forecourt at work with 1/2" snow!!

That is why you should really go off wheel hp.
