I've just set up a website to help me sell my car parts. Only problem is that my website doesn't show up on the search engines. The website was set up about 12 weeks ago and I was told that the search engines may take a while to pick my website up. I've set up the keywords in the Meta tag.

Any advice anyone ??

Do I have to contact each search engine to register or something ??

Thanks

Search engines are complex, generally over time you will be picked up if your site is deemed relevent,

You can contant each search engine seperately and have them add you, this will speed up the process.

There are a few companies out there that will submit you to search engine

http://www.omegadm.com/ is one, they are a client of mine.

Thanks for that Mike.

Only problem with their service is that it costs £1500 setup and then £250 per month.

I need something that is geared up more to a small business, like myself.

Thanks

Andy

there are several utilities available for automated submission, some give free submission to the main sites and then charge for more widespread submission.

have a gander at tucows for example

I've used search engine commando in the past which was good

Mike

I've just used submitexpress.com.

Cost about $25 to submit to most search engines (they claim 75000 !!!).

Was this a wise move ???

Cheers

Andy

Well once submitted they will know about you and start spidering, you will mainly become available if people wnat your content, and your site is deemed relevent to the search.

Its quite hard to get a good listing these days, a lot of people try and fool the system,

Hi Andy

A good program that I use fairly regularly is Web Position Gold. I cant remember how much it costs but I am reasonably sure that they do a trial version.

Just do a search on google and you will find the website. Alternatively if you are really serious about being found you could venture into the Pay Per Click engines such as Overture. I have used Overture in the past and it does work. If you are sensible with what you bid per keywords used you will get results from this.

Hope this helps.

Chris

Andy -

Personally I'm sceptical about web submission companies - in the searching world Google is king, and there's simply no sure-fire way to get rated there (or speed up its crawling).

The most common advice is to submit your site to dmoz (http://www.dmoz.org) - this is a human edited catalog of sites, and anything added to there is automatically added to Google's crawl-list. Problem is that it's human edited and there's no guarantee that you'll be added. It is free though.

Other general pointers:

* Think about the keywords that people are likely to use to search for your site, and make sure they're in the body text of various pages on your web-site.

* Make sure your TITLE tag contains a good sprinkling of the keywords. The TITLE tag is highly weighted in Google ranking.

* Make sure you don't use doorway pages or Redirects at the front door of your site

* Try to avoid frames, and where you have framesets, use the NOFRAMES tag to put your text in - bots will read this.

* Check you don't have a "robots.txt" file on your web root, or anywhere further "up" the web server you're on.

* Where you use images for text, make sure your TITLE tag and ALT tag are filled in

* Try to get other sites to link to your site. This back-linking is a mainstay of Google's ranking algorithm. The more sites that link to yours, the better your page rank (generally).

* Don't be tempted to use SEO cheats such as cloaking or keyword spamming. Google-bot will likely find it, and you'll be in their black-list for good.

Russ.

The pay-per-click route is worth investigating - I think that I've an

article in my computer somewhere about tips and tricks; when I find it I let you have it.

Couple of things that I remember was to go for slightly less

obvious keywords as they are cheaper and also consider

using miss-spelled words.

I used the Google pay per click and got a bill for £350  i wouldnt use it Andy

I agree with Chris ... don't use google ...

Overture are good .. I still use them myself and you can manage your account very well online ... You can put restrictions on the amount you spend as well just in case you do get a lot of traffic but no many closing sales.

HTH

Thanks for your help guys.

Concerned already about my submission to submitexpress.com. I havn't heard anything from them yet and get an auto reply if I email them.

Mike, was this a company you know are reliable ??

Thanks

Andy

Andy Let me know the URL I will check your source code out and make recommendations on Search Engine Changes and submit it to the usual thousands of search engines for free just this once! But the guys are right...there are some key ones that you need to get listed on to drive any business your way Martin

I know people who have used them in the past but I have never used them

I'm sure it'll be OK then if you know other people have used them.

Thanks again

Andy

Well I have received an email from submitexpress, and they have suggested I do a few things before I do the submission. I can sort out getting a few links setup, but the rest is all Irish to me !! Can anyone help me do the other things that are recommended. If it requires some time then I can always pay you in Z parts :-)

Heres the info they sent me..........

- The TITLE Tag is the most important ranking factor.

Currently your title does not have enough keywords.

This is the title that appears above in the browser

window and it is what will be listed in the search

engines as your page Title. You should include some

of your keywords in there. Your TITLE can be about

10 words or 75 characters.

- CurrDescription META Tag section: you should

use 255 characters or about 2-3 sentences and include

some of your keywords in there. Also, try to make this as

catchy as you can. This is what will be displayed in the

search engines.

- We recommend using a few 2-3 term keywords in the

keyword Meta Tag section. Single term keywords are very

competitive and less descriptive which will not

result in targeted traffic or higher ranking. Separate the keywords with

commas.

META Tags are very important for search engine placement.

If you don't know what META Tags are you can go to the

following page to learn more and generate META tags for

your page:

http://submitexpress.com/metatag.html

Additionally, your webpage editor should have an option

to include META Tags.

- The body text of website is good.

You should use each keyword on the body text about 3-6

times per 100 words to make sure your site gets a good

ranking. This can be accomplished by our optimization

services without making any noticeable changes to the

actual site. For more information please visit:

http://www.submitexpress.com/optimize.html

One of the most important ranking factors with major search engines is link

popularity, which means the more pages linking to you the better your site

will do. We checked the links to your site using our link popularity

checking tool (http://www.submitexpress.com/linkpop/) and there were 0 links

to your site. You can click below to see this:

http://www.submitexpress.com/cgi-bin/linkpop/popular.pl?url1=supercarparts.c

o.uk&url2=&url3=&email=&mail_list=&back=-2

We recommend that you attempt to create at least 50 links to your website,

but the more the better. For competitive industries, thousands of links may

be necessary to achieve a top 10 ranking.

We recommend that you start a link trade campaign with similar sites to

yours or sites in your industry. Once a page is linking to you, submit that

page to all the search engines using our free submission tool

as well as AltaVista's free submission option at:

http://addurl.altavista.com/addurl/new

Another option is post links to your site on message boards and other

directories. Again, once your link gets listed submit the page that has your

link on it to major search engines.

- We recommend using some keywords in links and large

texts or

Heading Text. Keywords used in these area

will improve your sites ranking for those keywords.

In order for us to submit your site, you must respond

to this email by typing "SUBMIT NOW" in the subject field

and include everything that is in the body of this email.

A report will be sent to you after your website has

been submitted.

Thanks

I'd really appreciate that.

the address is http://www.supercarparts.co.uk

If you need the password to change the text etc (the website was created by oneandone.co.uk), then let me know.

oneandone.co.uk have a utility that enable beginners like myself to alter the text, meta tags etc.

Andy tried to send you an e-mail but you are not accepting them from the forum at the moment.

10 words or 75 characters.

You have used the same title for each of your webpages "300ZX, Skyline and Supra used part suppiers" you should also include z32 r33 and any other key indentifying words. Spelling 'Supplier' properly will also help ! As it says 10 words is enough. Combination or term words are also recommended ie 'Nissan 300ZX' 'Toyota Supra' If you vary the title of the pages you may increase your chances of that page also being listed in the search engines

- CurrDescription META Tag section: you should

use 255 characters or about 2-3 sentences and include

some of your keywords in there. Also, try to make this as

result in targeted traffic or higher ranking. Separate the keywords with

commas.

Unfortunately you have not separated any of your keywords with commas so it reads "300zxskylinesuprausedpartssparesz32r33szdismantlersbreakerssuppliersjapsalvage". Change this to "300ZX, skyline, etc" but also include "Nissan 300zx, Toyota Supra, Nissan Skyline........

We recommend that you start a link trade campaign with similar sites to

page to all the search engines using our free submission tool

Including your website address in your http://www.300zx.co.uk and other forum posts may help with link ranking

- We recommend using some keywords in links and large

texts or

Heading Text. Keywords used in these area

will improve your sites ranking for those keywords.

This refers to the TEXT used as headings on your webpages. Large text with the H1 heading tag tells the search engine important keywords follow.

Although not mentioned by submitexpress it is also sensible to add a description tag with the same keywords ie Nissan 300zx to your website pictures.

If you are still struggling send me an e-mail and I will give you a call.

Cheers

Martin

Martin

Thanks for that. I will attempt to make the changes you suggest, although I think I am limited to what the oneandone software will allow me to do. eg. title name for each page - There is only one field in the setup for title, not one per page. Anyway, I'll have a go and let you know how I got on.

Thanks
