Does anyone know what the import duty would be on USA goods valued at $345 and also do you pay duty on the $85 shipping ? Cheerz.....Vinz

I am sure you pay tax on the shipping as well which I find discusting. Lets consider that 90% of the shipping service is done in another country but we pay tax on the full amount of shipping considering they cost from the airport to your house will cost £10.

Hello Vinz,

I ordered good to the value of $432 a while back and got hit £50 for duty and Stuart is right, they do tax you on shipping too.

You don't pay "duty" on shipping, you pay VAT.

The exact duty varies depending on what tariff code the thing you are importing is. And just about every single teeny little thing has its own Tariff code. For example:

Fuel Regulator is 870 899 9890

Shock Absorber is 870 880 9000

Gearbox Oil Seal is 848 590 8090

Every single Tariff Code can have a different duty percentage.

Now, how do you find out what the tariff code is? Either buy the Tariff Code books which cost a bleedin fortune or work for a shipping agent. You can ring the local HMCE (Her Majesty's Customs and Excise) and they will give you a phone number (TARIC Consultation 01702 366077) and you can ask them what the right code is for the item you are importing. But only three items at a time. (good grief)

Then you have to call your local HMCE office and give them the code to find out the duty rate.

That's why I gave up and bought parts from someone who already imports parts! LIfe's too short.

And this applies only IIRC to goods imported from outside the EU. In the old days, this applied to everything imported into the UK - but now if they are goods in free circulation in the EU (i.e. made or already imported) you don't have to do this anymore. (If you're still reading, that is at least one concrete good thing about the EU.)

Anyhoo - car parts generally (apart from the exceptions which I don't know what they are) tend to be about 2.5% - 3.5% of duty and then of course there's the 17.5% Vodka and Tonic on top.

The equation is (parts cost + duty + shipping) all + VAT.

So for a rule of thumb ((parts + 3.5%) + shipping) * 1.175 should give you a good enough idea. Roughly what Smithy said!

LMAO!!

Please don't take this as gospel but I'm pretty sure that you can avoid all those dreaded extras if you get the stuff described by the sender as 'refurbished seconds' or 'used' and declare the value for customs purposes as nil. Worth checking out !

Of course we're all buying refurbished seconds and used officer :D

Unfortunately 99% of shipping from US must have insurance, yer can't have nil on the customs form and a certain amount on the insurance, figures are susposed to match.

that's ok untill it goes missing in transit then if you have described it as a lower value then that's all you can claim for :(
