I've come up with a way to modify the shifter boot to make it work with the automatic gear shifter.

The automatic shifter boot has a nice rolled up edge on top of it which ends directly below the OverDrive button on the shift lever. It looks absolutely great - the pictures DO NOT do it justice!

To show you the general idea, here are some photos of the whole auto Z32's cockpit with these boots.

Now for a closer look at the automatic shifter boot:

What do you think?

Good idea?

Bad idea?

please get a new knob that looks like a manual, that jus looks........odd in my opinion atleast.

Good, infact Great idea!!

Only one draw back tho'......

Stupid question I know but;

How do you know what gear your in...??? Park is easy, you might slap it into reverse without realising put foot down and BOOM....hello to the car behind, You might even sell you car to someone who has never used an AUTO box and does not have a clue which is what.

Just asking dumb questions! You may miss the obvious problems.

I do like it tho..

Cheers,

Matty.

everyone should have a feel for what gear they're in...... but then a lot of cars have the light up back under the speedometer that tells what gear you're in, my camry does, i did'nt check in my 300 yet, oh well i'm goin for a complete clean up of the interior tomarrow =)

Hey, I know it's a drawback when you don't see the numbers. But... I don't think you can change between P, R and N without keeping your foot on the brake.

It is a tad risky, that's a fact. That's why it's not for everybody. But in general if you've had any decent experience with an auto tranny, you should be fine I think. Maybe you'll have to work the tranny a bit slower sometimes...

Personally, although I've never owned an auto car, I've driven a few and I don't think I need to see which gear I'm in. If you know your car, you can tell that much by the position of the lever and by what happens when you let off the brake...

Well, the Z doesn't have the display on the instrument panel unfortunately... But you're right, everyone should have the feel for their tranny and for the car.

If you don't have the feel, you never let go off the brake and floor the gas anyway, so even if the car starts rolling in the wrong direction, you should have time to stop it and change to the gear you want before you can do any damage.

Think it would bug me personally not being able to see what gear I'm in...

Other than that - it does look very nice..

I think it'll be a Navan auto shifter for me though, and a brushed ali style surround..

I liked it until Matty pointed that out! Bummer!!! Would be better in a car like my Merc which doesn't have a straight auto. gate. So I do have a feel for where I am in the box.

Sorry Keepsake mate, I love the look but don't think I could do it! Paranoia would defo start to set in "which gear have I just selected?" etc.

;-)

Looks good to me. Mine beeps when in reverse so It should be OK.

I'll trial it if you like, how much for the handbrake and auto in black??
