I have cleaned the throttle bodies, but sometimes my idle speed (engine completely warmed up) does not fall to its normal 700 rpm. Instead it stays at about 1000, sometimes falling to 700 or 800 if the traffic lights stay on red for a long time.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks

John

I'd do the usual checks first.

TPS & Temp sensor connector clean.

May be worth resetting the ECU so that it can relearn.

If all else fails try cleaning the AAI connector.

Try squirting some carb cleaner in the feed tube for the AAIV (idle valve). Its on the rear of the passenger side of the plenum - you should see a pipe going along the side then bending round the back. Usually when you clean the throttle bodies, it washes all the crap back into the idle valve and it becomes sticky....

then disconnect the connector to the idle valve controller at the back of the plennum rhs and re set tickover hot with a small flat blade screwdriver. Then re connect it to give control back to the ecu You got to get between the battery and the plenum to adjust the tickover.

Problem is WillieO, that sometimes it is idleing at 700, so I dont want to lower the idle speed, I am just trying to get it to idle consistantly at 700.

Thanks

Yep - also reset the ECU ;)

John, Willie's point was that once the Idle valve has been cleaned out, the base idle may have been affected and will have to be adjusted to return it to factory spec ;)

Thanks for clearing that up Andy, will give it a try over Xmas holidays.

Thanks

When mine was idling too fast sometimes I found that wiggling the connector to the tps would make it settle down. Gave the connections a good scrape and its been fine since. I also did all of the above and have a really stable low tickover now - could almost stand a fifty pee on edge while idling. Then it falls into the fan and blinds you ir does some damage to something else;)

Andy,

how do you get at the feed tube to the idle valve to clean it? What do you have to undo to get to spray some carb cleaner in it?

I am having trouble finding it on mine.

I see a small pipe connecting to the passenger side throttle bodies, then it disappears around the side, underneath other stuff, I cannot see anything at the back to undo (to spray with carb cleaner)

Thanks

John

Might be worth cleaning the TB's out while youre in there, a bit of crap stuck in the openy closey bit can cause an eratic tickover.

I have cleaned the throttle bodies, the idle speed is not very erratic, sometimes it just does not want to go down to 700, stays at 1000, and then, may eventually go to 700

If it's any consolation, I have the same idle problem as you, even after doing all of the above.

Sorry for the delay mate! If you follow the large black pipe down the passenger side of the engine, you'll see, about 1/3 of the way towards the back of the engine, a hose (1" diameter) comes up off that, bends 90 degrees then goes onto a metal pipe. This metal pipe runs along the side of the plenum to the back, where there is another 1" hose which bends around the back of the plenum and goes onto the idle valve. Big breath :). You'll see the metal pipe is held by a 10mm bolt on the side of the plenum and also by one of the balance bar bolts - take these two bolts off and then remove the hose from the idle valve. Then you can happily pour £££ of tri-chloro-ethylene into your engine :D You may find that the wiring harness which runs down the passenger side of the plenum gets in the way but take your time and everything will move out of place...

While you do this, disconnect the battery - by the time everything is back together again, the battery should have been disconnected long enough for the ecu to reset itself. Just remember that the ecu can take up to 500 miles to re-learn and during this period, idle will be higher than it should be so don't expect an immediate change ;)
