Well, finally got round to taking a look at the wife's car today and although I didn't take the while off, I'm afraid it's curtains.
Manage to limp to the petrol station to put air in the semi flat tyre and it started leaking whilst I was pumping it up. The sterring wheel is now points to 2 o'clock and when I turn it's very scarey. As the car is only worth about £400, it's not even worth considering repairing it. It's MOT is coming up and it will need tyres, the clutch is on it's way out, the cat is now hollow, the drivers window goes up on the p1ss, you can smell petrol fumes if you have the sunroof open, so I have been down to the local car supermarket today.
Was very suprised to find that you can get a lot of car for your money nowadays. 4 years ago, I bought the Rover (416 SLi) for £6.5K and it was over 4 years old. Today, I could have bought a brand new Megane Dimonique for £9.700 and that had CD player, ABS, PAS, air bags, push button start, electrics, alloys, air con, fully adjustable everything and it has a 5 star NCAP rating.
Nearly said yes but there isn't much leg room in the back and seeing as I like to lie down when I'm driving, it would only wind me up if after buying a new car, my passengers were sticking thier legs in my back. So, am considering a laguna, or a mondeo. I know, i know, yes, I said mondeo, but for the money, which was £9k for a 18LX on a 03 plate, which had everything that the megane had apart from the push button start, you find me a car to match it. Vectras, which I do like, but are just a glorified cavalier that are not as safe or as good on the road.
The mondeo seemed to have everything we needed, and seemed a sensible choice. If I could afford it, I would have got a 3 series BM' for her, alas.
Any other ideas guys? Safety and space are the main considerations although, no estates or (I have no friends) people carriers.
