Update on the wife's car.

Well, finally got round to taking a look at the wife's car today and although I didn't take the while off, I'm afraid it's curtains.

Manage to limp to the petrol station to put air in the semi flat tyre and it started leaking whilst I was pumping it up. The sterring wheel is now points to 2 o'clock and when I turn it's very scarey. As the car is only worth about £400, it's not even worth considering repairing it. It's MOT is coming up and it will need tyres, the clutch is on it's way out, the cat is now hollow, the drivers window goes up on the p1ss, you can smell petrol fumes if you have the sunroof open, so I have been down to the local car supermarket today.

Was very suprised to find that you can get a lot of car for your money nowadays. 4 years ago, I bought the Rover (416 SLi) for £6.5K and it was over 4 years old. Today, I could have bought a brand new Megane Dimonique for £9.700 and that had CD player, ABS, PAS, air bags, push button start, electrics, alloys, air con, fully adjustable everything and it has a 5 star NCAP rating.

Nearly said yes but there isn't much leg room in the back and seeing as I like to lie down when I'm driving, it would only wind me up if after buying a new car, my passengers were sticking thier legs in my back. So, am considering a laguna, or a mondeo. I know, i know, yes, I said mondeo, but for the money, which was £9k for a 18LX on a 03 plate, which had everything that the megane had apart from the push button start, you find me a car to match it. Vectras, which I do like, but are just a glorified cavalier that are not as safe or as good on the road.

The mondeo seemed to have everything we needed, and seemed a sensible choice. If I could afford it, I would have got a 3 series BM' for her, alas.

Any other ideas guys? Safety and space are the main considerations although, no estates or (I have no friends) people carriers.

If your going for a Mondeo, go for the TDCi, as it's quite nippy :D (well that's from someone who has not driven a Z).

Get to use new Mondeo's as Company cars every now and again, and although bland (apart from the radio controls on the steering wheel), is quite comfy to drive, and can do 120 mph no probs :) (well when the road ahead is clear anyway).

Only problem I found with normal Mondeo's is that you cannot screw the gears as hard as I would like (i.e. redline until the engine shrills, and then change down a gear), it feels like it loses a bit of power.....although i'm sure the Missus won't be doing that...I hope anyway.

Anyway, drive the standard Mondeo, and then try the TDci.... ;)

Oh, and did I mention 50 posts

Long live the banana

Oh, and the last time I did this, apparently I had to many smilies

Can you ever have too many smilies?

Cheers mate.

Nice Home page by the way.

Why not go for a second hand BMW 5 series, Omega, etc. that's the type of size you need.

Looking at a new one myself;)

I personally don't think the VW marque is worth the premium the last few years, may as well get the Octavia or the Toledo... engine and drivetrain are all the same anyway and Seat suspension setup is much better. (IE it goes round corners and pays some attention to what angle the steering wheel is at, unlike VW and Audi  )

I almost totally agree, but the badge still has something going for it over a Skoda, even if the car is not much/any better. Seat are nice, esp the Cupra R Leon.

A new passat is due some time soon, so there will be some deals.
