Hi,

I had some really bad fog yesterday - could not see more than 20ft in front of the car - had to drive by the white lines on the road.

Cant say the ZX front fogs did any good!

Anyone else found similar??

They are fine for additional lighting in normal/poor conditions but fog....

I thought the fogs where OK.

Z lights are notoriously bad and there are 1001 ways to make them better but only slightly. Cos has been making inserts for lights which should makes the head lights better.

Fog lights are for other people to see you, not vice versa! It's not the lack of light that hinders perception, it's the lack of contrast because of the scattering. Lights don't help, they just make the average grey of the whole scene a little bit lighter!

Also true of headlights in fact - only main beam is really intended to let -you- see where you are going.

If it's foggy, drive slower, simple as that! :(

zevans... Your little sentance on front fogs maybe true, but can't the front fogs be utilised like other manufactures do, as driving spot lights???

Rear fog lights are for other drivers but I dont think front ones are. Front fogs are not much brighter than head lamps and often then not have the same bulb as head lights.

Rear fog lights are brighter so you dont go ploughing in to the back of the car infront.

Front fogs are low to the ground because the fog is actually very thin down there. They are designed to light up the road but mostly the cats eyes and road lines from under the fog. Your normal head lights tend to just light up the fog and any light reflected back from the lines or cats eyes, is bled out by the bright reflection of fog.

If you notice fog lights light up a wide area not too far infront from the car. This is so it lights up the lines and cats eyes at the side of the road so you are able to see them because the fog is not glowing with your head lights.

In foggy conditions you are meant to use your front fogs with your side lights and not dipped lights.

I use my fogs all the time, just fogs in the day, fogs and lights at night, though zeds do look good driving on just fogs at night everyone tends to flash you which gets on yer tits after a bit.

They are flashing because you are blinding them.

There is a reason it is against the law to drive with fogs on when they are not needed.

Well SOD EM!!!

I AM KING OF THE ROAD!!!!!:D ;)

I also drive with my front fogs on at night.

Would they rather squint a little bit, or have me crash into them cos I cant see with the rubbish stock headlights on their own? ;)

About 1 in 50 people flashes me for it.

I tend to drive with mine on round country roads just for an extra bit of light - My guilt evaporates when 95% of other cars have badly adjusted lights and blind me! Gits.

I used to turn mine off when i saw a police car, but these days im too busy turning all the other illeagal lights off, hiding my mobile phone and putting my cup of coffee somewhere its not going to fall over!!

Think yourself lucky you hsavent got an elise, the fogs on them come on with the headlights and theres nowt you can do about it!!

Hi all

For better visibility in the fog, fit all weather bulbs into your front fogs, with the slightly yellowish tint (Halfords or Osram).

They don't reflect the fog back at you like headlights do. Always worked in my Poopra:)

Sadly I don't have fogs in the Uk Zed:(

May just fit j-spec ones though.....

......anyone selling some;)

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH! This drives me absolutely f*ckin potty! Anyone rolling around with their front fogs on (when there's no fog), especially where I'm mostly driving (unlit country lanes) should be soddin' castrated... no trial, just balls off! I thought the front fogs thing was just stupid Festa drivers trying to make their car worth looking at(?!). It's blinding for me coming round a corner to have some tit with their fickin bright fogs blazing... so because I've lost the ability to see the left-side of the road, I have to drive closer to the middle, which is ultimately more dangerous (head on vs ditch). If I put my car in a ditch because of some thoughtless w@nker, they'd probably never even know. If I had my way, fog lights would be banned from all cars. Maybe they're useful in fog (I dunno) but they're dangerous because they're so frequently misused. What's so soddin annoying is there's no way to educate some people - these tosspots that get told to turn them off by the law seem to think it's cool to put them back on again because it's rebelious!

All that said, I've no idea how good fogs on a 300 are in fog. I don't have them. A while ago I had to buy new headlights (one was leaking, one got a bullet hole) and they are infinitely better than they used to be - compared directly with other 300s. I dunno whether Nissan modified the design in later ones, but they actually work now. I recommend you stop being a tit Mr Birkly and get some new headlights. Everyone else who drives on fogs... castration.

Personaly I don't drive with the front fogs in normal conditions, but I don't get blinded by other people who do...

I just love it when they lurch up behind you .... and you can see they've got their fogs on .... and you know they're gonna have ago .... and you slip the zed carefully into 2nd or 3rd .... and you let them accelerate hard .... and you allow them to get side by side .... maybe even edge in front .... and then .... well, then you poke your right foot down, light up the back end and give them some low visibilty and a reason to use their front fogs .... and perhaps a reason to worry the next time they try to "take" a ZED!!!:D

fog lamps have a very wide fan shape beam but its also very shallow so it should pick up kerbs but not be reflected back at you. Put some on mine (UK car). They have 55W H3 bulbs in them.

Also mate got fined £40 for forgetting to put em off after drivng through fog and missed his flight with an unsympathetic Mr P.

According to law they should only be on with seriously reduced visibility.

Yet loads of people with a habit that makes em blind anyway use them all the time as twinkling jewelery especially in crystal clear weather.

I don't know what sort of fogs some of you guys have, but mine throw loads of light on the road right infront of the zed, compliment the low beams well and as the light is thrown lower than the low beams, I can't see how I could possibly dazzle anyone, and I've never once been flashed for it.

To be honest, it's painfull to drive without them as the low beams are so shite!!

Funny how the only people who object to fog lights are the people who haven't got them!!!:D

Wouldn't make any difference to me cos I navigate with a white stick lately, thanks to everyone elses fogs :D

The proper spec for front UK fogs is supposed to provide a pool of light for some ridiculously short distance like 15 yards, which isn't much of a stopping distance. You can see the ROAD much better, sure, but you can't see the road AHEAD any better!

Guess SRRAE is right when he says it helps avoid kerbing and lights up cats eyes close by, but that's about it... It does FEEL a lot better having them on but I'm not sure it does truly help when driving anything over 20mph. Spose you can at least judge the lateral position of the car more easily which leaves more of your brain free for guessing what's emerging from the grey swirl in front...

I think the dazzle thing is because of the low driving position (even more so in a lowered car) - dipped beams in your mirror / windscreen aren't dipped enough when your arse is that close to the tarmac. Not helped by the following car driving too close of course.

And how many of these problems do GATSOs fix? None. [sigh]
