Tax/duty on buying a car abroad and driving home?

Anyone know what tax you'd be liable for if you bought a car from the Netherlands and drove it back to the UK?

A mate of mine is pretty sure he is going to buy a Karman Ghia and drive it back. He was wondering what tax will be liable? And at what point they are paid or asked for?

Thing is its a Californiam import so duty must have been already paid on it once to come into the Eu?

I said one of you guys will know!

Any help appreciated as always.

I think you have to pay import duty and VAT to get a car into the EU. Once it's in the EU, I think that's it.

Cheers Dave. So seeing that that was paid once, with any luck, won't have to pay it again.

James - that is correct. VAT / Tax is due when the item enters the EU for the first time, cruisers (boats not 17 year old Nova drivers) often enter the EU via Turkey as this has a low rate.

Make sure that he gets a receipt to say the landing taxes have been paid otherwise he will run into them again.
