Out of interest, because I don't know the answer, how would a crack in the piston lands cause you to burn oil?

Are the piston lands cracking a sign of the ignition timing not being retarded enough under full boost?

I doubt that would cause the oil to be burnt in the bores as the oil is scraped by the bottom two rings.

It might make the engine breath really badly though.

And there was me thinking you'd taken Kylie out for the evening:D

Interesting Jezz, however I have also asked an engine builder up here and he said ............

Yes it will use engine oil with a cracked piston,an engine that can't breath will also use oil;)

I'd tell you, but I'd only make you jealous :D

At the risk of sounding a bit camp, I ran my finger along your crack the other day, and it felt tight enough that nothing was gonna fall out. Still, they reckoned you can't have even been trying. If you wanna see an awesome hole I could probably put up some impressive pics :)

I think I caught it at the right time Si;)

Come on then mate show pics of your hole:rofl:  :D

OK, so I need to take some good ones first. My two broken standard pistons look pretty screwed... kinda like yours but with more bits missing. And my broken forged piston looks like an aloooominum volcanoe's exploded. Stu might have a pic of that. I need to drop back into SE to get pics of the others. But I'll be there again in the week. Did they show you the piston (dunno who's it was) with the thumb-sized hole in the side of it?! Damn!

It LOOKS DISTURBING!

But why do other cars achieve greater reliable HP on the standard setup??

S'nuthin' - this is what happens when it lets go properly.

And for those poeple who might not recognise them, the lumps of metal near in the front were once valves !

That damage WILL cause oil usage!!! Yes the oil scrapers will stop any oil going up past the piston, however, blow-by gasses will be increased dramatically, causing excessive breathing, which in turn will blow oil vapour into the intake. This is how the engine will use oil. This is also why the engine stopped smoking under lower boost - lower boost means lower cylinder pressures which would decrease blow-by, making less oil get blown into the intake...

Anyhoo, back into hiding....

CheerZ,
