I'm looking to improve the bass in me car, so I've decided to get a sub. But I know next to nuffink about ice, except it makes ya drinks cold!!

So....

Do I need to buy an amp to run a sub?

Can I just buy any old sub, or do they have to be the same make as the head unit?

WTF is an active subwoofer? How does it differ from a normal sub?

If it helps, my head unit is a Sony Xplod one!

All help and suggestions gratefully recieved..

Ok mate here is the download on ice (in car entertainment)

An active sub is a subwoofer that has its own internal amp to drive the sub so no need to buy a seperate amp. Its all included and usually its boxed 2 saving you more money. But till this day iv never seen any active sub that is worthwhile as the majority of there internal amps are shite.

If youre gonna buy a sub ur gonna need a amp.

You dont need to buy the same manufacture items you can mix and match.

Just make sure ur head unit has rca outputs to run the sub. (1 should be fine)

I prefer alpine head units as they oooozzzzeeeee quality sony in my opinion will do.

Whats ur total budget including fitting and then ill tell u whats ur best option.

Are you gonna stick with the standard zx speakers or you gonna upgrade anything else.

Let me know

Thanks for the speedy reply.....:D

I'm looking to spend about £200 in total (hopefully fitting it myself as I like to have a go!!).

I've allready fitted Sony xplod speakers in the front and rear of the car. Small ones at the front.. bigger ones at the rear (told you I wasn't an expert).

I'm not looking to shake the Earth as I drive down the road, but would like to get the best for me money!!

I have seen a Sony active sub XSAW200X for £150.. are these really not worth the money?

What do you recomend??

Ok about a month ago mobile world security in hounslow middlesex where doing a sub/amp deal for under £200 ring them up and haggle them for the price if your not local try and get them to throw in delivery for free.

Its a kicker competitonVr 12" sub with box and a pioneer amp (800w amp - but u never get that amount its usually about 250-300) which in my opinon are not to bad. Its not top quality but for your budget its one of the best you can get.

Kicker do good subs and pioneer is better than sony thats for sure.

Wiring is thrown in so u dont need to buy anything else.

Everything is included in the price.

There contact details are 0208 570 9999

The deal was called the compvr and kx75.2

Another deal is a kenwood package 12" kenwood sub with box and wiring all included and a 350w kenwood amp.

Out of the 2 id prefer the kicker 1

This was is also under £200

The company is car audio security 0207 681 0591

Let me know if you need any more help

p.s. where u from

If you have a motaworld close by they do the JBL GT3 12" subs for £49. These have a faily good bass range and sound punchy.

RMS power = 200W

I think the "15 is about £69 (not sure what the RMS is)

Dont be fooled by these cheap amps offering huge power, they are generally pretty poor and dont live up to there power quotes.

You will need a separate sub and as facial says, the active subs are not all that good IMHO.

You will need the a 5M RCA lead, OFC speaker cable, power and earth cable's. It will be cheapest to get these in a all in one package.

To be honest kia and not to discredit ur reply but the JBL subs are good but they have a tendancy of not being accurate and they are quite distorted sound quality wise. There all boom boom without that much quality. Iv gone through more subs then i can imagine. Im a bit of a bass head and i love my sounds.

The kicker in my opinion is better for the money but £49.99 is cheap at the end of the day you pay for what you get as they say.

But if you ring around people will be more than willing to throw in wiring and a box if you buy the sub and amp from them in a package.

Kia's right about the wire lengths so when u order tell them its 5metres of wiring u need.

Cheers

p.s. by the way kia its spelt faisal or fas not facial - dont sound to good saying it like that ;) :D :p

LOL, yeah sorry bout that....

Must say the kicker subs do seem to be one of (if not the) best SUBS out there.

I had some JBL monsters (cant rember what they were called) they were gut churning but were SPL subs so bugger all quality.

I was just thinking of his budget really.

Cheers.

PS I promise not to call you f***l again. :slap: for kia

The retail on the GT3's are £69.99. I think because motaworld shift loads of these they can do them that little bit cheaper. But if you got the dough go for the Kicker.

No worrys mate

It just sounded a bit girly and got worried the people on the forum might start thinking funny of me (which they probably already do) :D :D :D

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I shall now go and see what deals I can get. Mucho appreciated!!
