ICE RELATED - Amps? Someone break it down for me!

Terry F**kwit here is hoping to upgrade the sounds in his Captain Kirk before unleashing himself on his precious Z!

Have had said Blaupunked head unit fitted at Harry's(was this a mistake? Probably!) and now my electrical aerial is well confused on a day-to-day basis and my speakers keep cutting out when I add any bass into the equation...so...I'm binning the cheap Radiomobile rears, probably OEM fronts and am about to order a set of four Infinity Kappa 4" jobbies as fuck all else will fit! Can't be arsed cutting and farting about!

Anyway, digressing here, AMPS...have read as much as I can on some good sites about them, but I'm still not really in the know! When they say 2 channel how many speakers can you run off this? Do they mean 2 channels that will run one set each e.g. 2 x L & R = 4 individual speakers, or one speaker off each channel?

What I want is a relatively cheap setup as follows:-

Got the head unit installed

4 x Infinity Kappa 42.31 speakers

1 x Infinity Basslink Sub(easy to install)

1 x Amp...help?

Glen, I know you're up on yer ICE mate, not to mention the ICE God...El Tooley Generale!

Tim,

FYI - I am fitting a pair of Alpine SXE-4625 in my Zed (fairly soonish). Believe it or not but you can get them at Harry Halfords for £37 a pair. They are 4"x6", 60W Peak Power (15W Nominal) and have a frequency response of 70Hz - 21kHz - which makes them nice mids.

Hope this helps. Not sure about your amp question but I'm getting an Alpine MRV-F307 (4/3/2 channel) - also from Harry's.

Good luck.

Cheers!

Dan

how much do you wanna spend on the amp as we need to know ure spend before knowing what amps you can have

Viva El Tooley Generale...I'm not worthy! 300happy.gif

Tooley mate, help, looking at the Sony Xplod range...I don't wanna spend big bucks on the Merc. I'll save that for the Z! This is more of a training exercise than anything else, plus I will get better sounding Ibiza out of it at the end.

So these two are appealing:-

Sony XM-7527 (1 or 2 Channel) £209

Sony XM-7545SX (2,3 or 4 Channel) £199

So what the f**k is the difference here??? How confusing? Can I run everything off either of these two e.g. 4 x speakers and my Sub???

Explain Mr. O'Tooley ICE God!

Cheers mate

i know ure not gonna like this but i think you could do with both of these amps with or just the four channel for your speakers with possibly a smaller one for the sub. i know people run speakers and subs from the same amp but the sub really should be running from its own amp supply and not getting involved with with other speakers/crossovers all doing there own thing.....have you looked at getting one of the kenwood powered subs that has it own amp and crossover all built in.....i had two of these in the back of my pug and they were top notch with the added bonus they took seconds to take in and out and the cost is cheaper than than either of the amps your looking at. have a look in this months fast car there's a big write up on at least 8 self powered subs

Tim,

I've got a REL Q100 you could try. You won't hear much but your car will fall apart and the house next door will have the plaster falling off ! wink.gif

Tooley mate, this Infinity jobby is self powered by its own amp so no worries there. However, how would I connect all this stuff up? Say I get a 2 channel Sony Xplod, does this mean that I use one channel for the 4 x Kappas and the other channel for the sub? I don't think my Blaupunked head unit has a Sub out so do I connect the sub upto the amp anyway even though the Nuclear Sub has its own supply and amp? F**k me this lot is melting my brain...big time!

Andy, I know what you mean about the Rel, I've got a Yamaha for my home surround that would knacker the rear suspension on me Z just lifting it into the boot! Weighs a whole full moon mate...LMAO! Not to mention the fact that the new house has got to have double glaZing as it was not uncommon for the Yam to shake, rattle and roll the windows of an evening at the old place! Gives me Liam Karaoke stylee some excellent depth though..."you gotta roll with it...you gotta take yer time...you gotta say what ya say don' let anybody get in yer way coz its much too late..." etc. etc.

Over to you Mr. O'Tooley ICE guru Securite Generale...

Unless you want mega loud sounds go with this set up:

Get the 4 channel amp, use 2 channels to run the rear speakers and then bridge the other 2 channels to run the sub.

Basically a 4 channel amp will run 4 speakers, a 2 channel 2 speakers unless you want to run speakers down to 2 or 1 ohm.

By bridging the 2 channels you double the power (ideal for a sub)

Why not pop over one weekend and i`ll give you a hand if you want.

Bob

Thanks Bob, might have to take you up on that offer! I'm starting to get the idea now, I've read and partially understood a bit about bridgeing etc. So I'll go with the four channel...but the main bit now is how does this beast connect to all the other bits...

Infinity Basslink Nuclear Sub...

Bakin' me noodle...ahhhhhh!

Timmy - I quote;

"Four low-level inputs provide non-fading bass. Four high-level inputs also provide non-fading bass and the ability to easily interface BassLink with most factory sound systems"

The low-level inputs would be connected to pre-outs on your head unit - if it has them (unamplified line level outputs basically, not speaker outputs).

OR

The high-level inputs would be connected to (I believe) an amplified output - usually you splice into a speaker wire (so the sub is piggybacked onto the speaker wire).

Anyway that's what I understand by high-level inputs smile.gif

Low-level inputs are better, but you might not have that option if your head doesn't have pre-outs..

CheerZ Az,

I think you got it! I read the manual after posting back to Bob, that's how I understood it.

So end is nigh, and as follows...

4 x Infinity Kappa 4" speakers

1 x Infinity Sublink barker

1 x Sony Xplod XM-7545X(2,3 or 4 channel) Transvision Vamp

All being powered by German Sausage electricity 12 volt via Blaupunked head unit...LARGE!

Now all I gotta do is connect it up without a) electricuting myself and b) without fucking me Mercs electrics up...Hmmmmm!!! "BOBBBBBBB!"

Cheers all that parconstipated!

Tim

300happy.gif

Nay probs Tim..

If you're brave, you can do it with the batt connected.... smile.gif

Tip no.1;

Disconnect the battery smile.gif

To power the amp;

Run a *fat* +ve lead down one side of the car, directly from the battery. Make sure you have a fuse as close to the battery as possible, and then put a junction box near the Amp (you'll need to split the power to power the sub & amp).

Make sure you have an equally fat -ve lead, fairly short, to a good earth point on the chassis - personally I'd run a short fat -ve lead to another junction box, and then two -ve leads, one to each bit of equipment.

The amp & sub will be switched on via the amp-switch wire on your head unit (usually a blue fly-lead off the head) so they are only running when your head unit is on smile.gif

Anything else... Nope, think that covers it..

Just don't forget the fuse as close to the battery as possible.. Short a lead acid batt through the chassis and you'll weld the cable to the car at the very least, worst case you'll set fire to your captain kirk..

(Some people may argue this would be the best outcome.. Lol biggrin.gif )

Can't hurt to fuse the power lines to each device (sub & amp) either.

If your alternator is a little weedy, and output drops on big bass notes, you might need a power cap.. But that's a whole nother issue smile.gif

Az

Oh yeah - forgot..

Since your amp is self amplified.. I would have thought that you'd be best off running the four speakers (front & rear) off your nice amp, and then running the sub off a tap from the standard rear speaker feed (from the head)..

Bob, would you agree with that, or am I spouting from me arse? wink.gif

CheerZ GeeZer,

You've made my life simpler again, top banana! I was looking at the junctions for power and grounding on Maplins yesterday...yeah, this is looking alot simpler now with some guidance.

Main power back from the battery with nice 12AWG I think you use to a nice little splitter in das boot! Power to sub and amp(fused naturally!) and hey presto...top soundZ!

Best get ordering, and a trip to Maplins next week for amp power cable kit etc. Plus copious amount of fuses and junction boxes etc. etc.

This is gonna be fun!

Later guyZ, time to go get some chow...

Tim

;-)

Tim - just don't forget a nice fat (but not too fat) fuse as close to the battery (i.e. in the engine bay) as possible, so you have the least possible amount of unfused wire..

Trying to remember my GCSE Physics now.. Erumm... Current=Watts/Volts Is that right? Agh head hurts smile.gif So for example a 300W amp would require a (minimum) 25A fuse..

If you had two 300W amps say, for safety's sake I'd put a 60A fuse next to the battery, and a 30A fuse on the supply wire to each amp.. (Don't forget - your sub is an amp too..)

I've had my chow - Mmm pepperoni pizza wink.gif

Az

Tim,

Get a Kenwood Mp3 head unit from Harolds, they are top bollcocks m8.

Then you can download 12 different versions of Das Boot.

Oh and they usually want £349.00 for em but if you tell em that blah blah are doing em for £249.00 you should get it for that price,

etc.

Big Grin!!!!

F**k those Infinity squealers off! Phoned Merc. this morning to double check the size of the dash speakers...5.25's which is a bit better, so now I'm going for Rockford Fosgate HPC's instead...better RMS wattage(which apparently is the non bullshit figure as opposed to MAX POWER! Funny that, coz I know a mag. with the same name that's mostly full of Bullshit...LMAO!) which is nice!

So Rockies for the speaks and...can't afford anything else for this week...fecker! Maybe some fuses...

Tim

;-)

Tim - have you noticed that I'm a big fan of fuses? wink.gif

Infinity's are good speakers IMHO - bit small at 4" tho.. I've got some 6.5" components (1" tweeter, passive crossover) sitting in the garage ready for the Z..

Timbo,

RMS matters, the rest is bull. If the systems that claim they could pump out 100w "music power" really could, then the power supplies would melt down. A good example is the blurb that comes with PC sound cards etc.

100w "music power" usually realates to 50w peak per channel, which is usually about say 25w RMS (or thereabouts) for a dual channel system. Probably even more wildly inflated for a multi channel (surround sound) systems.

watch 4x6 speakers i got some and they fell through the stock holes in me z so i bought some kicker I570 (5x7) 45 watt constant 90 watt peak from halfords for £52 should have been £80

Yep, you learn something new everyday eh Mr. P??? MAX POWER HANDLING 500W's...yeah...my ARSE!!! Root Mean Square is where it's all about!

These Rockies are Ohhhhh soooo rooouuunnnnddddd, not 4x6's etc. etc. Mind you I go on about not doing any cutting...now I know why...in a certain mag. I read that a guy had bought an M3 and asked a local ICE dealer if they could cut into the rear shelf! Bad idea, they told him that the rear shelf is made of metal and forms part of the chassis, so he ignored them and drilled loadsa holes anyway...more money than common!

Woman smacks him up the arse a few days later and Mr. M3 is a write off, back end collapsed big time!!! Ha ha ha!

Tim

;-)

So you read Maxpower on a regular basis then eh timmy??? biggrin.gif

CheerZ,

Andy

well i think ure all snobs there's nowt wrong with good old maxy p i read it ever since it came out and i still think its a good read and a laugh....i dunno you peeps get a 300 and you think ure royalty lol

Shouting: "VIVA EL TOOLEY PRESIDENTE SECURITE GENERALE!!! HAIL"

I have recently started to read it again, Johnny advertises in there doesn't he, and was recently spotted at the Max Live show? So can it all ye who are casting dissa on Max!

Plus Max has gone all porny since I first started getting it...regular spots with Jordan and loadsa girlies off the Adult channel gettin' their "your twistin' me melon man!" out! LARGE!

So while the rest of you are Tommy Tanking to sad old Sunday Sport me and Sadam Tooley ICEsane are gettin' jiggy with da Max chicks...ohhhhh yeaahhhhhhh!

Tim

;-)

P.S. Haaappppaaarently this month has a 300ZX in it...booo selllleccctttaaaaa!!! Aiiiiiiiii!

P.P.S. F**kin' 'ell, Duffman Hoffman has posted twice in less than a month...WTF??? LMAO!
