I know it should be in the other forum but this is urgent.

I can get hold of two, cheap 255/65/18 goodyears for the back of my zed. The trouble is that it's currently got 265/35/18 'near slicks' on it... The wheels are 8's front and 10's rear, so the question is will the goodyears be ok????

Cheers for any help!!

Hahaha for any humour!!:D

ummm...have you seen the tyres?

a 255/65/18 whould be HUUGE, and doubt they sould fit aswell as looking like a tractor.

Also your speedo would read far too slow.

I'd stay away, but someone else here might of tried that size...

255/65/18 sounds like a 4x4 tyre. I dont think they will fit on.

You have an 18inch wheel and then probably a 2 inch tyre wall. It will be the equivalent of a 22inch wheel.

Your speedo will be completely messed up.

in that case, you are only coming down 10mm wide and a little in profile. should work fine.:)

255 a little skinny maybe, 265 is ideal or wider imho. I personally hate that look where the tyre is too skinny for the wheel.

But if they are cheap enough and yours are bald and risking you 3 points then I would go for them for sure, they will be fine.

i gotta agree with james on the size, though. mine is on toyo proxes but they are only 245 rears. not enough for the power which is steadily aproaching 380bhp.

for comparison I have 255/40 on 17x9 at the back. Decent size profile so 255/35 on 18's should be fine.

Width of tyre makes no difference to grip, you still get the same area in contact with the ground.

Grip is down to the type of rubber - and the surface it's

on.

Softer rubber = better grip but quicker wear.

I would have to disagree with you on that one! esp the 2nd half of the sentence.

tyre compound and surface are big factors, but so is weight (force on tyre), temperature range and suspension control, but the wider the tyre the more contact area, the more grip. If this wasnt the case, we'd all (for aerodynamic reasons) be running round on chewing gum compound 115's as they would wear out all the time but cost so little to replace that it would be worth it.

Let me reiterate gents....

Will 255/35/18's go on 10 rears which currently have 265/35/18's on and how big a difference will there be??

Answers of the YES/NO and NONE/SMALL/SOME/A LOT would be preferable...;)

Thanks for the hard or soft info!! I think i know were i stand on that already....:D :D :D

YES they WILL go on. There will be SOME difference to 265's. I am not that much of a tyre expert to say how much difference! But common sense says that 10mm less must effect it in some way......maybe minimnal? not sure tbh.

But as I said before, if they are cheap enough and a good deal and yours currently are risking you 3 points - then I would get them.

ok. 255/35/18 will go onto a 10-inch rim. Its unlikely you will notice a massive difference in grip unless the tyres are far removed but being (i presume) ZR rated, they shouldnt be too different. Your profile will drop very slightly and they will probably look a little bit small on the wheels, but legality, fitment and general usage should be fine.:D

how cheap are they?

Straight up answer - yes, I'd say they'd go on. But you probably won't like how they feel much. If it's to get you around for a while then OK. The tread width (255mm) is pretty much the same as your rim width (254mm = 10in) so the sidewalls won't look insane.

I reckon you'll be ok as I've got 235 on the fronts stretched onto 9" alloys and they look fine, so 255's on 10" will be OK.

so, how cheap ;)

It's physics!

If you put a wider tyre on, all that happens is that

the tyre does not squash down as much in the rolling

line. Same area in contact with the road.

You've seen tractors with double wheels?

That does not improve the grip but spreads the load

so that the wheels do not sink so much.

Trust me, I'm a scientist.

This probably isn't the right thread to start a discussion about contact patches... the guy wanted a simple answer (whether the tyres would fit on the rims), which I hope he got.

As for the contact area subject, I've seen a *huge* discussion about it on Scoobynet. You can't just sum it up with: "trust me, I'm a scientist".

255/35/18 will be much closer to stock diameter than 265/35/28, so would really be a better option for speedo accuracy.

Short answer, yes they are ok and would compliment 235/40/18 on front

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
