Finaly,after many months have wired up the temp,boost,oil clocks, theres a mass of wires behind there now,nice colours,the kids think its great,:D Big thanks to SRRAE(Stuart)for info and help after i got confused:eek: cheers mate.

PS,i now realise just how crap the stock temp sender/dial is,frightning:eek: :D

I realise some reasons why the engine can be too cold. i.e. things like O2 sensors not kicking in, safety boost still on etc. But I would like more info on what else it effects,if you can provide it :D.

This place has taught me a lot about the 300zx and I would like for it to continue teaching me.

 

It's easy to think a question is daft if you know all the answers, but some of us don't, that's the reason we ask in the first place. We don't post a question to try and look silly, it's other people who help us do that ! ;):p

Too cold = engine oil is too viscous and water from combustion not driven off builds up prematurely in the oil forming acids which give poor lubrication and rapidly oxidise the oil.

 

But a Zed is unlikely to get too cold. Too hot is worse than too cold. After a decent run, oil in turbos gets really hot when car is stationary and switched off as heat in turbos is not dissipated as fast. So heat on standing is big stress on the oil - hence turbo timers/bonnet vents. Less of a problem in winter;)

Yes Stu it can!

 

A lot of that extra life can be attributed directly to today’s higher operating temperatures. When an engine runs cold so does its lubricating oil, which means more potential for moisture and acid to form in its oil. At higher temps (both oil and engine) harmful deposits are boiled off. This prevents the slow destruction of bearing material and shortened engine life.

 

Additionally, higher engine temperature means better fuel economy and performance. The colder an engine runs the less efficient it is and the more fuel it burns. Cold engines need considerably more fuel to run smoothly than hot engines. In the hierarchy of computer sensors that control fuel delivery, priority is given to the Coolant Temperature Sensor, which ties fuel delivery directly to coolant temperature. Lower coolant temperature higher fuel consumption, higher temperature lower consumption.

 

Allow a modern engine to run too cold and fuel economy goes down, often way down. A decrease of 6 to 10 miles per gallon isn’t unusual and as fuel consumption increases so does wear. Wear increases because of two factors. First, the cold engine doesn’t heat the oil sufficiently and harmful deposits, moisture, and acid accumulate rapidly, then eat away at the inside of your engine. Second, the excess fuel dilutes the lubrication on the cylinder walls creating more friction and more wear.

Tony, where have you got your temp sensor? or have you got yourself a rad kit from smithy?

Bagins,no the S-AFC2 is not wired up,to be honest i think thats a job for someone with more knowledge,looking at the set up its fookin scary,anyone on here done it themselves!;)

Been thinking about this engine too cold stuff. What temperature should the Thermostat be kicking in at?? Surely this would ensure the engine came up to temperature then opened / closed on a run to use the radiator and maintain the temp.

 

Or am I just not thinking straight?
