This may be a long shot, but does anyone know the diameters of drifts that I should make up in advance in order to press out the old tension rod bushes.

Thanks

I did it by drilling out the rubber and soft stuff then catching the edge of the mild steel sleeve with a cold chisel - pushing it towards the middle and lo and behold the sleeve almost falls out. You dont need a big drift on this. Took no time at all.

Pushing the new poly one in is harder until you realise its supposed to go all out of shape before popping in

Thanks Willie,

I am putting back the Nissan bushes, so I may have to make up a wooden drift, I dont know if they can take the abuse when driving them in, I doubt it.

I will be fitting it this weekend (after I build my wooden ramps)

I doubt you can get em back in. The sleeve is kind of soft and unless you have the correct diameter tool and a big press I think it would be like getting toothpaste back in the tube.

Are you doing this because of the sticky on poly bushes above?

I would wait on more feedback from others as they all get re checked - if they're fatigue cracking then there's more out there! We need to know if this is a type / design mismatch or a failure in the actual product used.

Also the suppliers of poly bushes must take a view on this as "fitness for purpose" becomes an issue.

Willie,

I was planning to replace just one side of the bushes, as its only the drivers side that is starting to leak. As I am only replacing one side, I opted for the new Nissan bushing. I was unsure about replacing just one side with a poly bush, and yes, the sticky about poly bushes put me off.

I had though of making wooden drifts on a wood lathe to replace the bushes.

Thanks

Out of interest where did you get the Nissan bushes to put in? as far as I was aware they are not available on ther own despite the workshop manual detailing the method to change them.

Are they pukka Nissan with integral sleel sleeves? Or poly? The Pukka ones looked (from memory) like they were a certain orientation when fitted.

Just checked my poly's - no cracks also the rod can and does lean the bush to both sides as it should when the car is jacked up taking the weight off the suspension or compressed.

Looks to me like the poly allows full movement. I could see a 2" lowered suspension causing an issue though as it is neutral at stock level but would be compressed if lowered.

Yes, they are the pukka Nissan ones, I imagine they have the steel sleeves to press in to the rod. (I have not got them in the post yet)

The manual does say something about lining up with the mark.

I will let you know once I get them fitted.
