Hi People

I pick my Zed up tomorrow and with the mods its had done she should be pushing some decent BHP but how do i tell??

I spoke to grasshopper and they said its not worth getting it dyno'd as they will do a road tune.

So the question is, is getting the car dyno'd worth it and if so where and how much?

Cheers guys

I must admit - there is something about Dyno's that I just dont trust.

A couple of years ago a dyno session was organised, and this is no reflection on the person that organised it, but when we arrived and a few cars had gone on the dyno, the locals starting complaining about the noise. Therefore, the doors of the garage were shut and the only thing keeping the engines cools whilst on a run as a big fan.

I dont know, maybe it's just me but I just don't like them!

I think that sometimes it may be necessary to use a rolling road for setting up especially for realy precise tuning on say cars running mega bhp/high mods, but at the end of the day you are at the mercy of the dyno operator,is he/she confident in what there doing, knowledgable,at ease with setting up,are there good mega high powerd fans/good extraction/air flow etc,i have seen what can go wrong, its not a pretty sight, would be best, if looking to have this done is go to more than one and observe, check out the above,if happy with what you see then its up to you,a Z full chat on the rollers is a heartpounding thing to witness, especialy if its yours,so be carefull;)

If/when my car is ready to run full boost, and has something mappable on it, then I'll definitely be putting mine on a dyno for tuning. Couple of reasons really;

Repeatability - consistancy, being able to do (almost) exactly the same run over and over.

Safety - I don't fancy the thought of someone trying to pilot my car, while someone tunes it. I know of big accidents having happened that way.

The plan is to take the car to somewhere thats running a Dynapack system - I think that leaves Thor or Abbey in the UK. IMHO a hub dyno (remove the wheels, bolt the hubs to the dyno) is much safer than a wheel dyno (no risk of it flying off through the wall etc), plus there is no chance of tyre slip (not that I'd be expecting that at my level of mods, but you never know) as there are no tyres on the car to slip..

Agree with you there aaronjb, another good thing about the Dyna Pack is that it takes a lot less time than a rolling road, resulting in less stress on engine etc:)

Used a few rolling roads over the years, though not yet in me Zed. If you find a decent place they will ask you how far you want to go. I believe road is best for tuning and setting the car up, so GPS are right there, BUT if you want a power figure after yer mods so see what she's kicking out, then go for it. There are few decent ones in the NW area around warrington, so not far from GPS. Ask for a power run and not a tune up, they should ask you at what point do you want them to ease off, at the end of the day it's a simple get the speed up, floor it in 3rd, some use 4th and get the graph results, last seconds really and they can tell from the Graph what settings are correct and what arn't that might need adjusting, it's upto you if you do them. Usually find any garage doing the mods and has a set of rollers will gladly do yer a run or 2, garages that don't have this equipment don't offer the service else where or recomend it, incase it shows up faults with their work, not that i'm saying that's the case here ;)

just often is.

cheers

Oh it may also depend on the mods you've had done ? as some new OEM parts that were fitted at the same time, may need time to settle in, newly rebuilt engine for example.

Kirbz,

Rolling road, GRV at Oldham are superb. I have never taken the z there but they have done every one of our race cars over the years and are very good. They are knowledgable and know what they are doing.

Its still wierd seeing ya car there screaming away at daft rpms, and its stationery!!

If you use a rolling road just make sure they got some damn good cooling fans to keep the z cool!!!!!
