No piece of paper can be folded in half more than 7 times.

This is an old 'un, probably proved by lazy students somewhere at some point...

But why?? Surely if I have a piece of paper the right size to fold 7 times then if I made another piece twice as big and half as thin I could do it 8 times ???

The sixe of paper is irrelecant.

If you fold it in half each time it gets twice as thick..

Try it with an A4 piece of tracing paper. Should manage 8.

No :D

Dan - but then having thinner paper will allow you more folds surely?

exactly.

The thinner the paper the more times you can fold it in half.

LOL Well you'll no doubt have been sent the limited edition e-certificate along with your order ;) - lets see it then! :D

have you ordered one before..

Ive been looking for one for ages.

Guy, guys guys!

the paper thing is all about relative size to thickness. If you fold the paper 8 times, the combined thickness is 2 to the power 8 (ie 128 times) thicker. At the same time the sheet of paper is 128 times smaller, SO

trying to do the 9th fold is 128 x 128 times harder than it is to do the first one, ie 16384 times harder, which for most sheets of paper makes it impossible, GOT IT????

making the paper twice as big, or twice as thin isn't going to help enough, ok?

Now come back next week for a lesson in the relative thickness of a ZX Driver!

:D :D :D :D

I dont care, my sheet is 4 atoms thick.

The difference between 2^0 and 2^9 is 512 fold, not 16384 ;) Ha!

Oh b0llox.............the 'fax' that came over is on WORD and I can't attach it.

How can I post it up?

  • Author

Cool... :D...err...dunno? Will it save as a jpg/pdf?

Hee hee

EDIT : Try "Save as" then see if .pdf is on the list of file types - that should attach ok. Otherwise post it to Ajay and she could forward it on to everyone ;)

I don't know.........will it?

I have done something silly in WORD, not sure how I would attach it?
