Hmmm, its a digital VIDEO camera right???

Are proper digital ones well expensive??

H E L P.......

WTF are you on about? :D

Might be better if you used a link that worked.. :D (it's all done with session cookies, probably works fine on your PC, but not anyone elses..)

Oh, you fookers.

I need to get my mum a digital camcorder, Google chucks me onto Kelkoo. So I tap in 'digital camcorders' on there and loads come up........but on alot of them it says accessories to buy with this camcorder.......and it then says 60/90 minute tapes! wtf? digital camcorders dont use tapes..........do they?

You dont get some that record onto memory cards and some onto tapes do you??

Do you?

Well do you? LOL. :D

Two types of digital camcorders in essence.

Type one records a digital image onto a magnetic tape

Type two records a digital image onto a memory stick

one is reasonably cheap, a little bit of a pain in the arse cause you cant put the tape into a converter like you used to do with mini tapes, you can only play it back using the camera as a player.

two is quite expensive and limited by the size of memory stick you put into it. You can download the stick directly into your pc, or play it onto the tv using camera as player

I have type one and it is ok, would like type two, but too expensive for the amount I use it. Like most gadgets you spendd the first three weeks filming everything that moves, then stick it away (in my case under my desk) and it doesnt see the light of day from one year end to the next

HTH

I think... (think).. that most digital camcorders record onto DAT tapes, as it's a much cheaper storage medium than memory..

If it's got a 'DV' port (Firewire, IEEE1394, i.Link are some of the other names for the same kind of port), then it's a Digital Camera - as the DV port outputs raw digital video (and audio)..

IMHO.. E&OE.. ITASIDKMA..

ITASIDKMA - I'm Talking About Something I Don't Know Much About

[edit]

Darnit.. beaten to it :) Still, at least we both agreed :D

[/edit]

Now you're speaking english, I can answer your question :p:D

YES digi camcorders do use tapes - they just store a digital image on it instead of an analoge one. Memory sticks will give bugger all recording time - 90 minutes is never enough anyway...

Babble babble....

A-HA!! Cheers Jock, I'm getting somewhere now!

So the type that uses tapes, are they a pita to convert over to store on your pc? I said its for my mum but I will be nicking it quite regularly to film the Z doing silly things like doughnuts and going through the Blackwall tunnel! Then to show you orrible lot! LOL. ;)

Christ man, you must have some stamina.. I'd only need a 2 minute tape... :D:D

Thanks Duff and aaron too, your reply wasn't there when I started my reply!

So, the tape one's.........whats the score with getting the filming onto your pc??

The DV port will let you plug it straight into your PC, so long as your PC has a Firewire (IEEE1394/i.Link) port... (You can get cards with those ports fairly cheaply) and some software..

Your post changed before my very eyes!

So, all digital camcorder's have this DV (or something similar) port?

but I MAY have to buy a card and software to download it onto my pc?

Cheers guys.

Very nice...

I'd say that one will almost definitely have an i.Link port (Sony's name for a 4-pin IEEE1394 port), so all you'll need is a card to plug it into on your PC...

Or get a nice Sony Vaio PC/Laptop, as they all have i.Link ports :D And most come with video editing software..

James,

Where did you get it from in the end ???? and if you don't mind me asking how much

£400 delivered. Not bad considering the spec! Still, its painless when its not your money! From Kelkoo.

My mum wanted small and its only 9x7x11cm!!

Thanks for your help. ;)
