NOT IBM!!!!!

I usually have Quantum, but they got bought by some one.

Since then I have had Maxtor and Fujitsu and they have both been very good.

Maxtor get pretty bad press. Anything with a 3 year warranty is considered a bonus.

Which is a pain, as the only ones that seem to work in the Sky+ boxes are Maxtor drives.. and their QC leaves a lot to be desired - some drives last forever, others fail in a few weeks (like the one in my first Sky+ box)

I've had all of the makes now, I think - there's an IBM and a Seagate in my old PC that ran virtually non-stop for four years.

Hmm. That probably doesn't help you much :)

ive had a 40 and a 60 ibm run for 2 years no probs contstant hammer, when i worked in the pooter shop maxtor seemed to have a pretty high return rate, ibm did get some problematic drives which tendered to suffer from heat and fail, mines got a fan which blows over them. i would go with seagate or ibm

I ve had two MAXTOR hard drive failures in the last two months :o :o which blows as i had alot of video on them.

been doign alot fo reading about this and i recon Seagate are th e ones.some good prices at ARIA at the moment.

I didnt think any offered 3 years warranty any more. I know Maxtor and IBM did, but they changed that about a year ago.

Maxtor and Quantum are pretty much one and the same I think.

The older IBM DeskStar (usually refered to as DeathStar!) are considered pretty dodgy, but the new IBM/Hitachi drives are supposed to be OK.

Generally hear good things about Seagate and Samsung.

Surely the Sky+ boxes aren't reliant upon a specific drive manufacturer - the TiVo's can take any IDE drive but they all had Quantums as standard. Mine now has a 120GB Maxtor (!), but all the others I've upgraded have an IBM Deathstar or two. No failures yet ...

That's what I thought too - however the listing at http://www.hummer.co.uk/drives-tested.htm certainly implies otherwise - all the Maxtor drives worked, but the two Seagates tested didn't... Sounds very dodgy, I know - but then Sky don't actually want you opening the Sky+ anyway, so I wouldn't put it past them to do something like look for a manufacturer string in the IDE drive identification.. I suppose the problem is that while the TiVo is basically just a Linux based PC, the Sky+ is all proprietory hardware.. Still haven't gotten around to opening mine though and trying things out - I need to get a set of Torx security drivers first.

So the IBM that I bought from you is a crock of shit then...I wondered why it has had bad sectors and keeps crashing my computer sounding like someone scraping nails down a blackboard. Sooper dooper.

Looks OK. More here too :-

There is no such thing as a good or bad hard disk, there are only peoples opinions on them.

ALL hard disks break down.

Buy the biggest and fastest that will suit your needs and NEVER EVER rely on it working consistently.

Dont listen to peoples opinions on one make or another, as they are tainted by the one or two or three or more hard disks they have owned that may or may not have failed.

Trust me, all hard disks fail.

Diamond Max 120Gb Maxtors are a good buy at the moment.

But they crap out just as much as any other.

and dont bother with ebuyer, they are sharlatans.

u just gotta love that scrapin sound tho, i love it when i save to me g drive that has bad sectors on it, scrapes for 5 minutes then decides to tell me to scan this drive. lol
