Sometimes when moving fron park to 'drive' I have to use the little red selector release, anyone know why I have to use this sometimes and not other times ?

The only time you should have to use this is when the engine is not running. (you do know that pressing the brake activates the little sensor?)

I have tried pressing the brake when it first fails to go out of park, does not always work - is there some kind of switch that the brake pedal actuates ?

yes, when you press the brake it releases the lever, maybe this has broken.

I will have to get down on the floor and look for the switch, I assume it is inside the vehicle down by the footwell somewhere

I just checked the manual, alongside the stop light switch is a switch called the ascd switch, needs to be adjusted to 1mm max gap (I think thats what it was) - that must be the autobox switch, will do that this weekend
