I get lots of people ring me up with problems with their engine. As most of you know the PTU is always the first thing that comes to mind.

So I can give more informed advice to people regarding this issue, could anyone who has had a PTU go wrong please state what symptons they had before they replaced their PTU.

Thanks

Andy

The first sign was when my car cut out in traffic and wouldn't restart for around 15 minutes. It was then OK for the rest of the journey (around 20 minutes).

The same day, on the way home, just as the car got up to temperature, the rev counter started dropping to 0 and then bouncing straight back up. It did that 5 or 6 times, then stalled completely and wouldn't restart.

An ECU check did show a code 21 error.

Mine started missing and spluttering then died.

Wouldn't restart for about 15 mins until it had cooled down.

Did a couple of miles and the same again.

Eventually got it home in about 5 stops and a couple of hours!

For a long time before that I had a problem starting from very hot.

Every time I did a long motorway thrash I would stop and the car wouldn't start for 20 mins but was fine before and after.

Total misfire causing loud bangs and sometimes flames out the exhaust. This happened for about 6 months happening only every now and then, but became more frequent.

The day it stopped working the revs would cut out at different revs. First when I got to 4500rpm the engine would not stall but the throttle would cut out until I released the throttle completely and then applied it again. This limit became lower and lower until I couldnt go over 3000rpm.

When it failed I was accelerating hard off a roundabout the revs reached about 3500 rpm and wouldnt go any higher. Very very loug bangs, probably 5 or 6 in a row, odd lick of flame and puffs of soot occured for a bout 2 seconds, before totally stalling.

Engine would not start at all. After cooling down for about 30 mins, the engine would start but then die within 4 or 5 seconds and then refuse to start.

My experience is not the norm. This is what happens when you engine is warm and you at high revs when it fails. I heard some one say the same thing when theirs failed at higher revs.

I was licky. It was just a very bad connection on the PTU.
