Well, I've just spent 12 god damn hours installing the new speakers into the Zed. I ordered the Alpine SXE-1725S for the front and SXE-4625S for the rear.

They made a mistake and sent me the SXE-1750S for the front which is £30 dearer but , suprise surprise, I won't be returning them. However, these come with separate tweeters so I'll have to make a hole in the door panel for them which I didn't really want to do but since they're 'freebee' I can't complain.

Unfortunately, none of these speakers have the same fixing points as the existing- just my bloody luck. I've spent most of the day making MDF spacers for the front. What a pain.

So far I've only managed to fit in ONE speaker. Well, two if you count the tweeter.

Can anyone suggest a way of fitting the rears in other than MDF spacers???? Or is there also a simpler way to fit the front speakers too????

I did manage to sort out the annoying knocking sound when I close the driver's door cuased by a loose black plastic central locking thing.

Finally finished it earlier tonight. What a complete pain.....but worth it.

If the speakers had fitted into the existing housing I'm sure it would take only a day to do.

All in all it was quite an experience. I had to drill the rear speaker brackets in the end as I couldn't face making the MDF spacers for the rear.

Yeah, I drilled the front brackets to accommodate a couple of 6.5 inchers.

How's it sound then? Are you happy?

Russ.

Hi Russ

The sound is an improvement in comparison to the previous set-up- mind you the rear speaker cones had come free of the seal and were flapping about. However compared with my home system, a little unfair comparison(?), there seems to be considerable lower range missing- slightly tinny I suppose. I thought there should be a little more bass. Perhaps this may have something to do with the fact that my DIY spacers should have been better made (there are small gaps between speaker and brackets), the speakers need to be deeper/larger/better, or I need a SMALL sub woofer for mid-low range?????

I might try thinking about a better way of fitting the front speakers first.

In answer to your question, yes I am happy now that I've got all four speakers working and rewiring done. All the hard work has been done and I have time to fine tune the speaker arrangement to try and get a balanced sound rather than just raising the bass increase setting.

Cheers

Nice one Van -

Yeah, I find the stereo to be lacking in bass myself, then again I'm using the amp off the head unit, and don't have a sub-woofer: go figure

I'm not interested in setting off property alarms as I roll down the high-street, but I am looking into some upgrade options for my motor. I reckon a beefy(ish) amp first, followed by a small sub in the back to beef up the bass.

Of course, I need to get the prop shaft centre bearing sorted on the motor before I spend any more money on the stereo! Perhaps after the throbbing from that goes away the stereo will sound better anyway!

Like these you mean ?

NewICE.jpg

heh, you must have a f_cking long lead to your speakers from those fellas ;)

What're the specs on 'em? How are you connecting them to your speakers? One for the sub and one for the fronts?

Russ.

LOL, Yeah and if I need to drive the car anywhere I gotta get an extention lead :D.

The left amp is a Longmill xj6 which will be running my 4 x 10" subs. The other amp is a Kenwood KA45 which will be running my front components (6" dual mag and tweeters) and my rear 3 way 6x9's.

This set-up will be finished in the next couple of weeks.

Sweeeeeeet!

I remember seeing those crossovers in the doors before. The Sub unit looks great, but I must be old - I'm thinking "Where's he gonna put his shopping??" :D

I'll check back in a coupla weeks to see how you're getting on. Good luck, I bet it's gonna sound awesome!

Hi Stu

 Bloody hell!!! Are you setting up a mobile disco???:p

Just think of the extra mass and power drain on the battery:D :D :D

I'll give it 2 months before you start going deaf mate. I must admit that I do like listening to loud music but never in a car around town. I work in the city centre and every now and again we all hear BOOM BOOM BOOM from cars going pass. I'd be far too embarrass for that sort of thing- the car stands out enough already.

Let us know how your baby sounds when it's all finished and will you be inviting us all on the forum to the your first disco ????:D

I think my speakers are stock (60w Kenwood 4 x 6's in the back)

But I bought a cheap subwoofer with built in amp (250w max) for £45 from the Indian chap in the Market Hall in Derby (you probably know the one I mean) and it sounds fantastic, plenty of bass and rich sound. The head unit I bought from Costco, a JVC with a 12 cd changer for £164 (incl. vat)

The sub is a 10" dia tube which fits perfect up against the rail for the boot cover, and is hidden by the cover.

Hi John

It's good to know there's another Zed owner in Derby. What colour's your Zed??? Mine's grey. Does yours happen to be grey too as I've seen a few grey ones in Derby.

£45 for the sub sounds good. I'll have to pop into there sometime. I don't suppose you can fit both the sub and targas in the boot can you????

See you

Van

Mines a grey one too, I have only had it 3 weeks though. I had a MR2 before that.

I have not tried the targa tops in the boot, I think they will still fit. The sub is 10" diameter and you can fit it up close to the rail where the boot cover re-coils into.

Cheers
