Can someone please enlighten me.

What does 'Hold' on the Autobox do? I have a Jap manual and a UK one on back order, but it's bugging the cr*p outta me.

Does exactly what it says on the tin...LOL!

Holds the current gear 'till you blow the tranny/engine if you really wanna hold for that long!

;-)

Ask a stupid question...

Thanks

Actually...

Hold changes up early to the highest gear possible ie for use in snow etc

Power setting revs it towards the red line before changing.

Are you sure about that? My Supra used to have a Power button like the import Z's and an overdrive button. Selecting power didn't really seem to make that much difference with changing, but the manual said it was an electronic aspect change in the settings of the gearbox. Hold, I thought is just an O/D button same as on the supra's, this is what revs you to the redline before changing.

Mines a '90 TT the Autobox has 3 switches, these are:

OD on the knob

Hold and Power on a rocker switch.

My old legend had a sports setting that used to rev to about 4.5 before changing and didn't step up to top until a switch was selected.

I thought that the box on the TT was the same but the Hold button has me bewildered.

Hold/Normal/Power are only only available on the Jap import Z.

Hold means that you never change into first gear, you always start in second, to limit power when pulling out of a junction in bad weather/low grip surfaces. It will change gear much earlier in the rev range and if you accelerate, it will not change down as readily to give 'kickdown'

Power just makes it hold off longer before changing so it revs higher and is also more likely to kickdown at every opportunity so you get the most power for that speed.

Normal means you get the best of both worlds but it depends on what you do with your right foot - feather the throttle and it will change, floor it and you may even notice it invokes 'Power' for you itself, then swtiches it back off when you are done scaring yourself....

It has no effect on Overdrive.

I love it - its a great feature on the box.

Not sure where this came from, probably either US or Aus/NZ, but ....

The Japanese automatic transmission has many more features than the export models. A "power", "normal" and "hold" switch is fitted to modify transmission shift points. The effect of the "power" setting is to delay upshifting, but does not alter the maximum RPM that change occurs. In order to change at the red line or rev limiter speed, one must operate the shifter manually. The hold setting allows holding prevents downshift into second when the shifter is set to "D", and prevents downshift into first when the shifter is in "2". Another curious feature with the Japanese version is that lock up is also available in second gear.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant...

I'll shut-up now then shall I? LMAO!

I never knew that Normal can invoke Power mode itself but it explains why I have noticed the light on a couple of times and slowed down thinking something was wrong, only for the light to go off!

I was begining to think I might have a dodgy mode switch on the auto box. Derrrr!

I must get an owners manual as there must be loads of these little features I don't know about.
