Dickens
I have seen the buy guide, and it mentioned that trying to avoid to buy the automatic z32 before 90, because it has overheating problem and "Z's with over 60 - 70K miles is in danger of failed turbos/seals - if they have been well looked after with regular servicing and good quality oil the turbos and seal can last to over 120K." Now, I have got one 90's auto z32, which runs 120000km already, it is imported in the uk in 2002, I worried that mine one will have the above problem (especially overheating), can anyone tell me what should I do if the problem occurs? and how can I check that is the problem occurs already? Because I am a new young driver, I don't know much knowledge of cars, please anwer my stupid question. sorry too many question.
AndyP
The overheating usually refers to the autogearbox, you can get a proper oil cooler fitted which solves that problem. As for the turbos, just use good quality oil and change it frequently, don't thrash it when cold or stop the engine immediately after a thrashing without letting it cool a little. b19rks
If your car hasnt got an oil cooler for the gearbox, i would reccomend getting one ASAP, the J specs just dont seem to last over here without them. First Zed I bought had no oil cooler, and the box lasted about 4 weeks, i think without the cooler the atf just gets cooked at high speed or in traffic. Second zed (the current one) had had a cooler fitted by previous owner, after blowing the box, and has never had any problems since and ive had it over a year now. If you want to look to see if yours has one it should look like another rad and will probably be located behind where the number plate lives, if you cant find one go get one fitted or you will kick yourself when you need to find a grand for a new box. All the best.
markstevens
I dont understand the idea that autoboxes dont last over here without a cooler, this implies they do last in Japan, where it is more congested and hotter? I am not saying that a cooler is not a good idea, it is, but this was not the reason for your gearbox only lasting 4 weeks, in all probability it was shot before you bought it, you just did not know. b19rks
I think due to their congestion, they dont have the opportunity to get their cars up at 100+mph for long periods like we sometimes can over here, and I think that its more the high speed rather than the hot weather that does the box more harm when the box is not cooled enough. Least thats my theory anyway!!:D
Bilky
Mines a J spec - no oil cooler - owned it 5 years - over 100,000 miles - I've put just over 60,000 on it myself and not one problem - gets driven daily to work and back. I think its not a bad thing to fit one - wont do any harm - but its not the rule that if you dont have one it will go boom. Just look after it and dont abuse it. Depends a great deal on who owned it before you got your hands on it.
AndyP
Have to agree with you there. Plus don't forget maintenance, I'm pretty certain that the service intervals for autobox oil are so far apart that it's seldom done at all.
