My Zed's been off the road for 6 months, the Tax expired on the 31st of March 2003. Although the car was registered in my name at my CURRENT address I received no reminder form as I usually do. I taxed it last week and would you believe it - the F*CKERS have sent me a fine for not filling out a SORN for a mere 8 weeks. The F*CKERS have had £89 for a car that's been off the road and now they want MORE. Does anyone know a way around this - it's not the money, it's the PRINCIPLE.

Many Thanks

Shaunmac.

I neglected to fill out a SORN for my car while it was off road for a while and they also wanted to fine me. I went to the local DVLA office and was all apologetic "sorry I forgot, my mistake, blah blah blah' and the very nice lady decided not to "prosecute on this occasion". She also advised that they are now getting very tough on the SORN thing. My advice, make a personal appearance at your local DVLA office and advise them of the circumstances and don't get stroppy with them even if it's their fault!

Just fill in the form. My girlfriend got a £25 fine for not declaring a car off road. It does acutally say on the Tax reminder that it must a SORN must be made if it is off road. As you said you didnt get one but they wont listen to that.

I would pay as the fine increases if you dont pay up after 2 weeks I think.

However what my mum does, she is great at getting out of these things, is send the cheque with a letter of complaint too and state you had no reminder about the tax and no thus no reminder about the SORN, and had no idea of how long the car was going to be off road as you didnt plan it. They will then look at you in a different light and not as a person who is trying to quirm out of a £25 fine as you have sent it the money.

It has worked for my mum but it was for something different and she was in the right.

Thanks lads. I work over the road from the local DVLA so I think I'll go there in "apology mode" and hope for the best.

Cheers
