Hi,

The air con on my Uk TT seems a bit warm even set at it's lowest temperature. I believe the gas may need recharging but am not certain.

Anyone had this problem or have any thoughts??

If it does need recharging does anyone know what gas it takes as I have been told that there are 2 types and the older one is now illegal to keep. If its the older type I am aparently gonna struggle.

The car is a 1990 z32 auto TT.

Any help you can offer would be great.

Cheers

The old stuff (R12 i think) is now illeagal to sell, there is a more safer one now called R34 i think, and when you have it regassed they take out the old and in with the new, ive heard the new stuff is similar to the old but not quite as good, not sure as mine still got the old poision in it and works fine.

Some one else should be able to let you know the prices etc but i think its not cheap.

Most air con specialist will be able to recharge your air con with new legal substances.

I know the place I will be going to in Manchester actually take out all the old stuff, check for leaks and then refill with the now legal liquid.

god damn you guys are quick!!!!!!!

I will investigate next week but I think they have to do a conversion of some sort for it to take the new gas and that sounds expensive but you get used to that on a zed i suppose.

cheers guys

From what I under stood with my emails with this company, no conversion is needed.

The quote I was give was £61+VAT for emptying old gas and disposal of it.

Flushing through a die to find leaks.

Cleaning out the die

fill up with new legal gas.

No mention of any modifications.

you've got 2 options -

1, there is a "drop in" replacement gas for R12 (R413 iirc), which is more expensive than R134a which is the commonly used gas now days.

or

2, convert to R134a. to do this you do need a conversion kit because a, the connectors are different & b, the oil used is synthetic compared to the older mineral oil used in R12.

if you do not use a proper conversion kit the old oil will not dissolve in the new gas & will eventually knacker the compressor.

I can get hold of conversion kits for anyone that wants them :)

The bloke what does all the Nissan work round here (Paul of Autocool 07780 960948) said that the old gas R12 was illegal (like what everyone else said here) and that the new direct repacement is R416a.

Cheers - Gio

Yup Got the 416 stuff 2 years ago and still works great. I checked it with a temperature probe and at min temp setting the temp of the air coming into the car is 8 deg C at the vent.

Cost £80

They recycle the old stuff they pull out. Its worth quite a lot.
