the car went into safety boost the other day but filling up with a higher RON fuel has fixed that within literally seconds of driving it on that fuel.

i stopped driving a few minutes after filling up with the different fuel (after a pretty hard 10 mins or so). BUT the idle was all over the place, falling to about 500 and nearly stalling all together!!

plus there is a nasty rattling sound coming from one side of the engine bay underneath and under the car i think. it sounds like the exhaust rattling but much worse. as you rev the engine the rattling gets worse.

could any one help, as ive only had the car just over a week and this is really worrying me!

It doesn;t happen to sound like a bag of nail s when you rev it does it ?. is it a TT or NA ? finger crossed you don;t say what I think you are going tot say :(

You have to find out where this rattling is coming from. Is it inside the engine or fron under it?

It could be oil starvation. The oil feeders could be blocked and not oiling the cams.

You could do an oil change and use an oil flush first see if that clears anything up.

Saftey boost comes on when detonation is detected. It is said to sound like marbles rattling in your engine. Is this what it sounds like? If so that is what it could be, but I have never heard of detonation at idle.

Try resetting the ECU see if that helps anything.

Well considering his first sentence said he went into safty boost ;)

I guess its a TT.

Stuart ;)

unfortunately yes its a TT. does sound a bit like a bag of nails. boost pressure seems ok and no smoke or anything. the noise does start before the turbos start to spool up tho, below 3500 rpm, (although i guess they do start to spin from pretty much the min u put your foot down.)

the noise aint really there at idle. plus iforgot to add, i first heard this type of noise very slightly yesterday night at idle before i turned her off, i had also driven her quite hard a little before that.

i'll try the oil thing.

the noise sounds like its from under the engine near exhaust manfold (turbo aswell unfortunately) you can also hear the noise coming thru the back box aswell slightly

Hmmmmm.

Your turbo bearing could be going and the blades are touching the casing. If so that is bad.

But Im just guessing now.

Stuart

it starts around 2000 revs. thing is it didnt appear to be constantly increasing thru the revs. it would get to a point when it make the noise very loudly and intensely and then stop or decrease. i think this was with the revs still increasing.

thing is if it were a turbo bearing i would expect a bit of smoke as the bearing sits on a film of oil i think? the boost pressure is back to normal aswell. i cant think what the oil presssure was like however, need to check that probably.

ive just driven her this morning and id say its def the turbo. blue smoke out the back and the noise starts the minute the boost gets past the first mark on the negative side.

does anyone know the rough pricing of a turbo overhaul or replacement. is it advisable to change both, although i wouldnt have thought so?

Where did you buy the car from?

Matty.

unfortunately i bought it privately, the bloke imports them to sell, dont know where he imported it from.

Whats the name of his business? He is a business if he's imorting cars to sell..........

Have you been on the phone to him to tell the cars frupped after only 1 week??

Matty.

no i aint rung him YET. trouble is what can i say to him?! he said he does it as a hobbie, but unless he was trying to hide the fact hes a business.

come to think of it when i rang him i always asked if THE car was for sale without specifying the zx and he used to ask which car as if he had several for sale.

I'd call him and see what he says, he might be selling crap cars onto the ususpecting public and that needs to be stopped!!

Hobby my arse.........he making money! You don't make money from hobbies, you spend money on hobbies...........

Phone him and tell him exactly whats wrong.....see what he says.

Matty.

if i find out he has actually got a business is there something i can do? if not and it is just a private sale theres nothing i can do really?

cheers for the help mate.

If its a business you can call trading standards, if not then I am not sure what the legal side of it is...........

I wish I could be more help, I hate to see people ripped off in this way.

:(

Matty.

no worries mate thanks for the help. im definitely gonna try and find out if he's got a business, hopefully he will!!! ifeel like ive been properly shafted tho!!

I really really really doubt its the turbos at fault. Sounds more like bottom end failure to me :( What condition is the oil in???

well its up to the right level if thats what you mean. i looked at it a few days back before all this trouble and the oil looked fairly dark, looked normal colour to me, but i havent looked since.

could the bottom end explain the smoke in the exhaust?

If the guy you bought from claims not to be a business, it would still be worth contacting the trading standards if you know he sells lots o fcars. They are always trying to track down people who are trying to get away without admitting they are traders.

I know they sometimes go through Auto Trader and try to find such people, and they will definitely be able to advise you on any action to take.

Id give everyone a clue as to who you got it from if i were you ie what town and city etc, the chaps age etc, quite a few of us have been shafted by dealers etc on here.

But judging by the short amount of time youve had the car id get it back to him and let him sort it, or refund you.

Goodv luck,.

hes from widnes up near liverpool. thats kinda the problem, he's about 250 miles away from me! so i cant really go and see him.

the bloke was short with black hair bout 30. said he'd dealt with Zs before, hope thats not with any of you! if he sounds familiar to a few people i might get in touch with trading standards lioke people have suggested, to see if he's got a business.

Sorry to say this but he (guy who sold you the car) has covered his ar5e impeccably.

I had a book years back on buying and selling used cars. It was written by a guy in the trade who had been a senior mechanic and a trader over the years.

Unless you have a premisis like a forecourt you can claim that you buy and sell cars as a hobby. Also you must not be placing ads under Trade you must specify Private.

You get away with paying all the business charges and tax if you are just buying and selling a few motors from home etc.

I know this sounds sh1te but it's true so trading standards will tell you the same thing.

I could go to an auction every weekend and come home with three or four or more motors and advertise them all from home as long as the ads were Private and they were all sold with a receipt saying "Sold as seen". You have no comeback whatsoever.

fook!!

it dont matter now, i wouldnt want to give up the car now anyway, just hope it dont cost too much to fix!!

i only payed 2500 for it anyway. he sold it cheap cos he thought the gearbox was f**cked, but i knew it was just the rubber boot on the gear stick out of place, so i guess i got one over on him too!;)

cheers anyway mate, saved me wasting my time with trading standards:D
