I'm now scared sh!tless of driving it in case I cause some major damage!!!! has anyone got any thought's as to what could have happened??????? james300
You've driven over some bubble wrap??? Is it a backfire kinda 'pop' ?? Maybe from booting it, a hose has come off? Check the little vacuum one's over by the r/h/s of the engine.
Guest Herman Munster
Any pointers as to where they are located? Cheers Mike
james300
The one that would pop off on mine before I cable tied it on was over on the r/h/s, near the balance bar, it goes from there over to near the fuel pump, kinda between fuel pump and the battery. While the engine is running you would also hear a hissing noise from the air escaping. HTH.........left my dig camera at home!
Guest Herman Munster
Cheers, I'll take a look. Am I right in supposing that if I had damaged the engine there would be some smoke? because there isn't any. Mike
Guest Herman Munster
I've checked, no hoses off, as far as I can see. I started it, tried gently reving it, no problems, reved it a bit more, still no problems, I can only get the boot guage to about 0 when static revving, though I didn't want to boot it. Is that normal? Maybe I'm just being paranoid!!!! Mike
jaffa
Are you sure none of the coil-packs have come loose and your only running on 5 cylinders? Would explain back-firing as the unburnt fuel ignites in the exhaust HTH James
james300
Was it a backfire kinda pop??? It would then be the usual suspects of PTU, coil connectors etc etc fookin etc! And I guess it will only do this under load, so revving it while parked won't produce the same symptoms/conditions.
Guest Herman Munster
I thought the sound came from the front, it sounded like a gunshot! The car seems to idle ok, I think I'm just going to have to drive it around and see what happenes :( Thanks again. Mike
SRRAE
This is what happend to my car just before the PTU packed in. The pops are very very loud like a gun going off. When the PTU causes a misfire the unignited fuel goes down the exhaust and ends up igniting, creating a loud pop, and often, some black soot. PTUs tend to just go on you, but on my car, the contacts where very very dirty and wasnt creating a good connection until if failed. For about 3-4 months before my car would make this reall loud bang and I had no idea what it was. Then I broke down because of the failed PTU and just before I broke down I got the same bangs and pops, just a lot more about 5 or 6 really lound bangs and pops in a row. Thinking back, the bangs and pops a few months back where probably caused by the PTU starting to get problems. Take the PTU off and give it a clean with WD40 and some sand paper on the contacts. Tell us if this helps. Stuart
Guest Herman Munster
Cheers, looks like I'm cleaning tonight then :D The odd thing is, the car had a new PTU when I bought it around 20K miles ago. Worth a try though. Mike
james300
Do you know if it was a series 1 or 2 PTU? The series 1 having the kinda 'fins' on it. Defo worth a thorough clean up!
Guest Herman Munster
Well, drove my car home last night, no problems, drove it to work today, no problems. I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it. Cheers for the help Guyz. Mike
WillieO
Take it you got boost back? Other possibility if you run big boost is to blow the side off an intercooler!
