Hi,

 

Sometimes I start up my Z and it sounds lovely, soundtimes it sounds like a tractor!

 

Sometimes a few minutes driving and it'll sound great again, sometimes it goes on for as long as I'm in the car!

 

Has anyone got a solution to this? It's had an oil change and that didn't do much good (wrong oil?).

 

Does it do the car any harm if I stick my foot down when the tappets givin' it some?

use the car more often using the car less than once a week is not enough i have found. oil drains out the tappets. mine has done this twice because of not using over winter months......

When you say its had an oil change. what oil was it?

 

Castrol 10/60 works for me! A thicker oil than you used may well see the noise disappear.

mine seems to me to make kind of ticking noise from the top of the cylinder nearest the dash. Thing is when i ask my matesif they can hear it they cant:confused:

 

I know that when its youre own car you can hear noises that no one else can.

 

Im already running castrol 10/60 and i reckon its more "ticky" since ive used this, was on 10/40 before i believe, im going to try a bit of that extralube ZX1 (least i think thats what its called) see if that does the trick.

 

Then again it could just be me, but a bit of friction reduction can't hurt.

Mine used to be noisy for about 30 secs from a cold start. It came down to poor oil flow around the heads cos the whole lump was really gummed up.

And what was the cure for it?

Umm... not sure you wanna hear! I don't think it was related (I had an occasional sticking valve too) but I ended up with two busted pistons, so needed a rebuild. They de-gummed it all during that. I think I was just unlucky. I could've put up with a bit of early morning clatter... but hey.

I can't remember the spec of the oil I'm using - though I know it's fully synthetic - 24 hour Le Mans stuff - I'll find out later what it's called.

 

I drive the car every day and still get the noise. So will thicker oil be better?

 

Am I doing any harm by sticking my foot down when I have the noise?

Mayber a stupid question, but are you sure that the ticking sound is not just your injectors firing mate ?.

Does that mean you have the results of your compression test ?

My 86 300zx NA had bad lifter noises, they got progressively worse until the car started to drop a cylinder or two after sustained highway driving.

 

My end cure was to replace all the lifters $400.00 parts and labor. This cured it for about 3 weeks, then it came back, at that point my car started to consume a quart of oil every 400 miles, so i finally gave in and bought it a used japanese import motor.

 

But in theory, cleaning out your lifters and or replacing them should cure the problem. I've also had people advise me to throw a quart of ATF in with the engine oil and run it around like that for about 500 miles to clean everything out. But ive never tried it.

LOL, yeah.

 

1 = 75lbs

2 = 175lbs - And we though this was the one that was screwed !!!

3 = 50lbs

4 = 75lbs

5 = 75lbs

6 = 125lbs

 

They say they have stripped back to my timing belt and the timing is spot on. The only thing they found was the radiator was full with sludge, so I need to give this a good old flush. Does this say anything to you ?. I had a new water pump and thermo as well as a flush in October, why would it be full of sludge ?

 

But I'll be taking it to someone I know I can trust just to double check these readings and hopefully have a cylinder leakage test as well.

 

Funny thing is I have been offered a fully working '93 Jap Manual TT for £2.5k I may buy it and swap the engine over and other parts I need and break the rest of the car. And before anyone starts with the I'll have the manual gear box etc. I said may buy it.
