What does it involve? Cutting away that little stump which stops the butterfly opening up fully?

Stuart

Yep, that's the one.

Cant see why not. how do you file it down? Do you have to take the plenium off?

Don't know.

All I know is what I have seen in the video and in that thread.

I'm going to Zedworld this afternoon, so I could ask Jeff.

4 red lights dont seem good to me.

At the end of the clip watch the upper left corner off his dashboard.

I dont own a 300ZX so i wouldnt know what those lights mean, but usually orange and red lights are bad.

I was thinking that myself. The dash varies from year to year and I dont have any lights there, so I cant say what they where.

Looks to me like the engine cut out but doesnt sound like it.

Im very confused.

dodgy electronics? bad alternantor? loose belts?

or he may just have royaly screwed his engine over by chopping bits of metal off lol

I reckon he stalled it so all the light came on.

revs drop to 0.

Yes I think he did stall it and then it came back on when he let the clutch out in gear.

He may have that problem with the induction kit, which stalls when you put the cluch in at speed becuase of the strange air flow some filters make.

Or could be the TPS which needs cleaning and resetting.

Early UK cars have an adjustment screw in the centre so it should be possible to adjust. I haven't had a chance to check yet but I wouldn't want to adjust it without taking the hose off. I suspect that the stops on the throttle bodies might be past full open. (ie the real full open must be when the butterfly is horizontal and the stops may pe past that point)

What he was saying is the butterflies dont open fully because of this stopper, which was done to cut down the power to make it less powerful for laws and stuff. Taking some off opens it completely, but if you take too much off you will end op having the butterflies starting to lean back which will be closing it again.

But on that vid there where stopers on each butterfly which stops this from happening. Come to think of it, there are ones inside the tube too. I think.

I just had a look at it on my Z. I will post my findings.

When I spoke to Jeff about it yesterday, he didn't seem to think it would make that much difference.

So I don't think I'll go at my engine with a file just yet ;)

I may have a look at mine at the weekend. It is possible that this was a bit of a manufacturing defect/tolerance/finishing thing on this guys car. If it was such an obvious problem on all cars then I'm sure that people would have noticed it in the past. I have heard of people boring out the throttle bodies, so it was been looked at in the past.

Right there is an adjustment screw under the throttle cable covers. This is a trick Japanese companies do to make it meet restrictions but can easily be changed. :D

You just get a 10mm spanner and screw it right down and the butterfly open up a little more to its horizontal.

I have pics but because its in an awkward place the angle which the picture was taken makes it look like there is no difference but there is. The 2nd pic was taken at a higher angle. :(

The pic shows the location of the adjuster. I will tell you if it makes any difference.
