Gearbox repairs?

I need some advice on the noise a gearbox should make!

I am getting quite a bit of transmission whine when rolling and when idling there is more noise form the transmission with the clutch disengaged in neutral than with the pedal depressed.

My trusty (non zed specialist) garage suggested they consider replacing the gearbox bearings, but I wondered if this was the total source of the problem.

Any of you experts have any comments? - Will bearings be worth trying or do I need to think about a complete recon on the box?

How hard is it to get down there - any hints on labour times involved would also be much appreciated.

Thanks.

What?

All you experts and no-one has a thought on my gearbox?

I know you aren't all driving Autos, I saw the survey results!

I really don't want to get the gearbox opened up for repair just to find that I should have ordered a new box before I started!

lol i think there are no answers because manual boxes dont have problems :D

first of check your rubber seal(just below the shifter) is properly in place, sounds stupid but boxes make alot of noise.

It could be just a bearing or so, in whihc case it is a Gearbox out job and has to be opened up.

I think around £400 + - to about £700 for a rebuild on a manual box.

Not an arguement starter but an observation about manual gearbox`s and bearing in mind I see a lot of zeds go through the workshop, most manuals that I see have "issues" like noisy bearings, clunky changes, slipping or worn clutches and some have all of the above, BUT and this is the point I make because all the gear changing is done by the driver, most of the time manual zeds are continued to be driven in a not so good state (gearbox wise) where as an auto will fail when any of the faults mentioned before occur.

Itsimply is not true to say manual gearbox`s fail less often, probably about the same in my experience but manual gearbox`s can be forced to carry on usually to the detriment of the rest of the car, I have yet to drive a zed with a decent clutch in!

Nigel, I would say you have a problem with the input shaft bearing, if the noise is less in 4th gear it would confirm it, as all the gear train is locked to one on the mainshaft and tends to reduce the load on the first bearing. A good repairer could sort it with a minimum of fuss I would imagine

Jeff, thanks for the help.

I must say that I haven't noticed a reduction of transmission noise in 4th, but I'll have a proper go at looking out for that.

Any clues on the level of specialist z knowledge required and the approximate labour required for the job you describe?

I have a garage up here who use a gearbox specialist for all this kind of work, but I have no idea how many zeds they've done.
