Hi all. I have a 1990 Zed auto tt targa japanese spec.

 

Sad story - had the plugs and oil changed by a garage in devon who said they could do zx's.

 

picked it up on monday at 5.30pm and set out for a 200 mile trip to surrey to vist the parents and attend a funeral the next day.

 

i noticed it was very sluggish, after 3000rpm there was no acceleration, top speed was 100mph, at traffic lights micras were overtaking me as tried to get to 60. can do 80 no problem once reached, but decelerate and then accelerrate - nothing. had enough at fleet services and called the RAC. he spent an hour taking the plugs and coils out and noticed that it was likely it was misfiring. however as he had no diagnostic equipment he couldnt discover which plug/coil it was.

the rac suggested i get a mobile tuner out who can discover which cylinder isnt firing.

i am now back in devon having limped home. the garage doesnt want to know and i am fed up!

 

can anyone let me know what is wrong. it idles at 1000rpm, starts straight away and turns off straight away. it doesnt stall but feels like the engine dies as you drive it. at idle if you rev it hard it only goes to 2500rpm.

 

Help please.

Sounds a bit like a problem wth the airflow sensor. Suggest you run the ECU diags first to see if that gives any clues. Useful links here :- http://www.300zx.org.uk/diagnostics.htm

If they have mucked about with your car it could be difficult to trace. Get a list of all the things they did/changed and start there. Garages will never admit they dont know anything about your car - they lose the business you see.

 

Suspect everything they have done - its the only way - especially if it was fine before you gave it to them. Check all the electrical sensors still have the cable attatched.

 

If they have done the plugs - as i see they have - suspect the spark plugs are either the wrong ones - not gapped properly - or when they changed the back 2 plugs they have to remove a balance bar - check all the pipes are back on and in the right places and also that when they put the balance bar back on they re-used the rubber 'O' rings to seal it back up and that they havent damaged any of them which is quite easy to do. I'd start there as its the most likely place they buggered it up.

 

The correct plugs should be platinum NGK PF6B11C - anything else and they have lied to you. Not easily available from your local shop and cost about £17 each and you need 6 of them!

Sorry - the plugs are PFR6B-11C

List of things to check:

 

1) Check all the coilpack connectors are pushed fully down onto the coilpacks

2) Remove the two 10mm bolts securing the panel between the headlights and check they have not disconnected the MAS (airflow meter)

3) On the front of the engine, looking from the front, you will see a finned rectangular box to the right, this has 2 connectors on it - check both

4) Again from front, this time on right, round metal device (WTF? LOL) check the connector on that.

5) Again from the front, bang in the middle, you will see two metal pipes coming from the engine and bending to the left. The top pipe has two senders on it - check the connection to the one on the left

 

Most likely one of the above to be causing your problem is number 2 IMO. The rest are just the things I could think they might have fiddled with and could do with checking for reliable running...

I have taken a spark plug out and tehy are unipart plugs - no: GSP 2055 O55-091

 

I am going to ring the garage to say they have put in the wrong plugs.

 

Can someone tell me who makes the PFR6B - 11C spark plug and where i can get them from so i can send the garage a bill.

NGK Make them - you can easily get them from Nissan - although they are obviously a bit more expensive that way about £17 per plug....They NEED to be at least platinum - although some people swear by Iridium plugs by HKS or DENSO - you cant get them from Nissan though!!!

 

Have you checked all the other stuff as well?

Thanks for the advice. I have checked all the other stuff and everything seems fine. The Rac thought that it was the coils or the spark plugs.

 

Where can I buy them from - Is it Nissan dealer or can i order them by post?

Just rang the garage and they are going to order the NGK plugs and fit them tomorrow. They apologise and reckon they had been sent uk spec plugs from their supplier and so are gonna demand a refund from their supplier. I will keep you informed and hopefully this will sort out the problem.

The plugs are the same - regardless of the country!

 

Did u check the MAS connector and all the others?

Isn't it great how garages 'play' the import scene - everytime they do something wrong its due to the difference between UK and imports LOL! Sorry but they fvcked up - no excuse!!!

Just A point to check.... take the panel off in between headlights(10mm socket) and check to see if the airflow meter has the wire connected to it as they might have forgotten to put it back on after fitting airfilters.

i have had a look at the air flow meter and there is a wire connected to it.

 

They are picking up the car tomorrow. I have just checked my invoice (am i thick or what) and the spark plugs listed have cost £6 each. just shows you have to check the invoice.

 

I have told them that they had better not charge me for fixing their problem and quoted breach of contract, negligence and they have breached supply of services and goods act.

 

I just hope that they have not damaged anything else.

 

Thank you all for your help in ensuring another garage has had to pay for their negligence.
