Hi, (1st post)

I bought a 1990 Japanese imported 300zx fairlady a couple of years ago and on the whole she's been pretty reliable. As with buses, all the problems seem to have arrived at once.

First off my Autobox will only go into first and second when in drive. It's still good enough to break the speed limit but I can't imagine driving bouncing off the rev limiter is going to do it any good :) Is this a common problem?

Secondly one of my turbos has started to smoke on idle. I realise I will have to replace this but should I do both together and can anyone recommend a good source for replacement units? I was going to try and get some kind of hybrid from Sylvia Engineering but as I understand it they have stopped trading :( I have stock units with bleed valves at the moment. If anyone has any second hand units I would even consider that as an option to get it back on the road.

Finally I had a problem a few months ago which went away all by itself. When driving at very slow speed, the hi-cas light was blinking and the back wheels twitching full lock side to side. Scary to say the least. I had the car on the computer at Nissan and they could see nothing wrong and nothing reported in the log. Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar.

Any advice anyone can offer on any of the above would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Jonno.

I'm not sure about the autobox fault but it sounds like a solenoid or something not changing up.

Probably time for a rebuild :(

The turbos should really be replaced as a pair because it's usually an engine out job to replace them and they will both be in a similar state of wear. Theres no point putting the engine back and the other one going a couple of months later.

SE are still trading but they don't have a website any more.

The HICAS problem sounds odd but could be a faulty speed sensor on the auto box or even that the auto box is confusing itself/the ECU because it's not changing correctly.

It might go away when you fix the box.

All I can say is it all sounds expensive!

I'm in a similar situation needing a new engine and box.

Chris.
